Other. We don't celebrate Christmas. However, I would not take away Diwali gifts from DD, but they are always going to be small and traditional anyways.

Christmas is Christmas. We are going to do Santa and the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny until they stop believing (or be like my mom and if you don't believe then you won't get presents from "Santa"). But no I think Christmas is a day to set everything else aside so my kids will always get presents.

I have taken away gifts. Its not about gifts. I also have told my children that " I am Santa Clause so I know when your bad or good"! They are pretty good  

Gifts are not a reward for good behavior. Santa isn't watching you nor is a creepy elf stalking you. I give my kids gifts because I love them and nothing will ever change that.

My friend is having this issue. If it were me he'd get no toys for Christmas.

We tell my son that the clothes/books are from us and toys are from Santa. If he's bad he gets no toys, but he'd still have gifts for Christmas.

Depends. A mouthy teenager? Hell yeah.

Christmas is an opportunity to give my daughter something she loves because I love her. I will never take that away.

See, I feel like that. We don't do the Santa thing anyways, but the gifts are because it's Christmas. . . and that's just what we do.

Then I think, what if I had a 10 year old who was a HUGE brat and never listened and just horrid. I'd still love her, sure, but if she were THAT bad and someone elses kid I'd think she didn't deserve any gifts, haha. Hopefully I never have bad kids like that though, lol.

And I hear LOTS of people who say "You have to be good to get Christmas presents" whether or not they use Santa as the reason, so it made me wonder. I can't imagine NOT buying them Christmas presents, which is why I don't use that threat.

I guess I was curious how often that threat was a real threat and if people REALLY would do that.

So, depending on the offense (it would have to be REALLY bad, like drugs or something) I would let my kid open the gifts, the lock them up after christmas until the kid changed their behavior.




ETA, DD is almost 4 and I definitely use the threat of no presents to get her to behave better, but I'd never go through with it.

This is why I hate what christmas has become. Most of the time it becomes an idle threat and kids start to learn that their behavior won't be punished.

I only do Christmas so I can use it as leverage to get her to behave the way I want.
