Flu shot

posted 3rd Dec
This is NOT a debate.

I repeat...NOT a debate.

I've decided that my LO one will need the flu shot this year. My husband is working PEDS and IM during the high flu months and she is around medical students constantly. She is also still in the "higher risk" category in developing complications.

Anyhow...Has your toddler or baby tolerating the flu shot well? I just get so nervous before vaccines.

The only one of my kids who has a flu shot was my son when he was 12 months. He got really sick a couple days later with flu symptoms and a hugh fever and had his first seizure episode which could not be controlled. He went into a coma and was intubated in the ICU for four days then regular care for three more. He had never been sick before that but my mom made me feel like it was a absolutely necessity. I regret ever giving it to him. He now has a seizure disorder that requires daily medication and we are hoping he outgrows it soon. Hell be 6 this coming sunday.
I haven't gotten him one again and my daughter has never gotten one.

My son had a very bad reaction, it was a site reaction. He is no longer even "allowed" to have one per dr orders. He has had multiple reactions though to three different vaccines though so he no longer gets any. My daughter never had a reaction, other than coming down with the flu and spreading it to all of us   We don't do the flu shot anymore needless to say

Did you report it to VAERS?

It was terrifying but he is a generally healthy little boy now. It's just now when he starts to get sick the very first symptom he shows is a seizure, before sniffles or cough or fever. He has a bad seizure before he gets sick.

That is good to hear! When my son had his very first reaction it was a vaccine given by the health department and they absolutely refused to even admit is was a reaction   His leg was twice the size of his other, it was hard, hot and red and a bulls eye right around the injection site and they kept telling me it was just coincidence

Yea, DD has never had a reaction to any vaccine (and she is fully vacinated except for the chicken pox...and she doesn't have that one only because she was sick at her 1 year app.)

There was no denying DS was a reaction. they tested him for every bacterial and viral cause possible and couldn't find anything other than his shot to have caused it. He had a high fever for 4 straight days (104 with Tylenol) and his injection site was just like your son's. There was no other possible cause.

ETA: I don't think the seizure disorder was caused by the vaccine. The doctors are pretty sure he would have had some seizure activity eventually regardless, but the flu shot reaction definitely brought on the illness that caused the first episode and made it much worse than it otherwise would have been.
