Will this hurt my supply?

posted 3rd Dec
DD is 3 weeks old and normally eats every 3 hours during the day, but at night time she can go anywhere from 4-6+ hours without eating. By the time she wakes up in the morning my breasts are hard and I have leaked through my bra. DD's pedi told me that if I'm making the milk and DD doesn't feed it will get rid of my supply, so now I'm worried that I am hurting my supply by not feeding her thought the night. Is that true?

And up until just recently DD would feed from both sides at every feeding (I ended up nursing for over an hour) but now she is only nursing from one side, which leaves the other side hard. I don't usually pump the side that she doesn't feed from because sometimes she will decide and hour early that she wants to eat again. Will not pumping and feeding from that side hurt my supply? Should I just be pumping anyway?

I am just worried about making enough for her, because even after I feed her it seems like she isn't getting enough and just ends up falling asleep instead of trying to eat more, and I'm worried that it might be partially due to the supplementing.

Well your milk will regulate to you supply and demand. If it isn't getting used at night it wil stop at night but should still produce on baby's schedule.

You can pump in the night for two reasons
1. You can build a milk stash for a night out.
2. You can get a yeast Infection or mastitis from milk sitting so long.

Maximus slept through the night early as well. He would go to bed at 9 and we would go at 10:30 or 11. I would pump before bed to build a stock up in the freezer. Your body will know to make less at night and more in the day...it really is all 'supply and demand'.

as far as her not eating from both sides, get her to. Switch her mid feeding to get both boobs working. With Maximus he was great on my right boob, but I would lay him the same direction as on my right boob, but on my left (know what Im saying?) Id put pillows beside me and lay him on those to get him to eat off the left and he had no clue about the switch. I also found the football hold was much better for the left, the side he didnt prefer as much.
