Cloth Diapers: Bum Genius, Fuzzi Bunz, Alva? (sp)

I'm pretty sure we are going to cloth diaper this baby, but now I'm wondering what brand to start with and how many to get?
A mama I met yesterday at my doula's house was using Bum Genius and she LOVED them. She let me check them out and SO and I were pretty impressed by how soft ahd confortable they seemed.
She said she tried Fuzzi Bunz but they just didn't fit correctly on her LO.
And I know Alva Baby is much cheaper than these brands but I also know cheaper isn't always better. SO is all set to order 12 Bum Genius (her husband convinced him lol) but I would like to get my BG mamas opinion first.
Also I know Bum Genius comes with 1 or 2 inserts per diaper so do I need to but more inserts?
I know I need a wetbag for the diaper bag, a pail for the room and special detergent. And SO is going to hook up a diaper sprayer on the toilet.
What else do I need?

Should I just buy 1 Bum Genius or go ahead and buy the starter kit? Do you mamas have any negatives opinions on these diapers? I have NO cloth diapers and buying 1 or 2 from 6-8 different companies when LO gets here does not sound like the best idea. What did you do?

I would not buy a whole bunch of one diaper at first. The only way to find out what you like is to try different brands. I hate fuzzibunz. BumGenius are good diapers, but Alva are JUST as good for MUCH cheaper. I prefer to do flats and covers over pockets.

You could do a diaper trial... you pay to "rent" the diapers, keep the ones you like and pay for them and return the ones you don't.

I have alva, both newborn aize and the laeger one size diapers and love them. They are just as good as the expensive ones.

Oh yeah, there's always this. Just remember to get newborn diapers. OS diapers won't fit a newb right off the bat. My 5 month old is 15 pounds and is still on the smallest setting of OS diapers.

Since you asked about any negative comments on the brands you talked about... never tried Fuzzibunz or Alva (we have Sunbabies, which are similar that I like) and I like the BG okay BUT they're not great for my chunky legged baby and the rise is too short now that he's already a year old. That's the thing about cloth, what works great for some will not necessarily be a good fit for another.

It depends, if you've got a cloth diaper store in your area they might do trials there. Or there's online trials. The ones I know of are:

I love their diaper designs! I haven't checked out bumkims, but I'll have to look at those also.

Their designs are adorable, but I have issues with them not holding as much as my FB. I double stuff them, and they still don't hold as much and always feel damp on the outside.

also...do you have any wipes? Wipes solution?

IF you're gonna do wipes, it's easy to make your own. I get cheap baby washcloths from the dollar store or TJMaxx and sew them together or to old receiving blankets. I make my own solution, too. It's just water with soap/coconut oil.

No! I didn't think of that, SO bought a pack of reg wipes do those work or do I need a specific kind?
