oven bake clay?

posted 3rd Dec
What's the difference in air dry clay & oven bake clay? Other than the obvious that one goes in the oven and one does not to harden.
Do they both hold up the same? Also, I've seen a recipe for making stepping stones and christmas tree ornaments out of salt, flour, and water (I think is all it said). Would that work the same as the clay??

I made the salt dough ornaments and they turned out bad. I used another recipe to make dough and they turned out amazing. It uses corn starch, baking powder and water (don't remember the amounts but I found it on pinterest). They air dry but you can bake to dry faster, though they turn a bit golden color if left too long. That made the ornaments turn out so much better than salt dough IMO.

I'm gonna assume one of those waters was supposed to say flour! haha. I saw a DIY page that showed how to make fingerprint necklaces with oven bake clay. I wanted to make my mom and grandma keychains with DDs fingerprint on them for Christmas. I was trying to decide if the water/flour/salt would hold up well enough for something like that or if it would break really easily.

For something jewelry related, you'll want to use an oven bake clay like Sculpey or Fimo. Fimo will harden better and be more durable once baked.

Salt dough has a HORRIBLE tendency to bubble up while it's baking. It can also crumble and break easily after it's baked. And it's surprisingly heavy. Not "OHMAHGAWDHOWAMIGOINGTOCARRYTHIS" heavy, but heavier than oven bake clay is.
