Does the mini-pill affect breastmilk?

posted 3rd Dec
So a while ago I posted about having issues nursing my baby. Well tonight it was just unbearable, he was at the breast for an hour and fussy, going between nursing and completely coming off the breast. There was nothing to stimulate him so it wasn't that and I know he was hungry. Today I think he had a total of 3 wet diapers and one super poopy one that was sort of dark green. So after the frustration with him nursing I gave him 4oz of formula. He was still hungry so we gave 2oz more and I have a feeling if I would have given another 2oz he would have taken it too since he was still going at the bottle after he drained it but I burped him and he seemed content.

We changed insurance for the kids so I can't get him in to his doctor until I get the new cards (supposed to be active as of December 1st but no idea when the cards will come). So he hasn't had an appointment since his 2 month and he is 4 months and a week now. So I don't know if he is losing weight or anything.

Tonight I started looking up about the mini-pill since I thought it wasn't supposed to affect milk but I read a few pages where mom;s have said the milk taste's funny or their supply diminishes, could that be why my kiddo is having so many issues with nursing? Since I started I have only had 1 period and had 2 days of spotting 2 weeks ago and then this weekend. I took a HPT the last time and it was negative. Haven't taken one recently. I haven't taken every single pill at the same time and DH and I do have sex with no other protection so I am not ruling out pregnancy either. I just don't want to go to formula and would sooner stop the pill(and sex since we don't like condoms) than give up nursing if it means that I can go until he is a year.

Sorry it is so long I just am trying to give all the info I can think of. TIA!

I had supply issues before I ever started the mini pill but I dont think it made anything worse. We nursed until she was 9 months old. I didnt have my first pp period until 7 months. Your supply can drop during your period, could be a growth spurt, teething, any number of things.

When did you start BC and what did you use? Did you change your BC at all since you started taking it?

the mini pill affected mine. the green poop means he isnt getting enough hindmilk. he can get ten tons of foremilk and never be satisfied.

I have had issues breastfeeding since he was born so I don't have much to compare to except the days that there are no issues to the days that are. I have only had one period though and that was when I started the pill the end of August/ beginning of September. Then just the spotting that I had mentioned. Not teething, he isn't wanting to nurse more frequently, he just isn't satisfied with nursing period.

try block feeding or pumping for 5 min first.

Yeah it seems like every diaper since I started has had green poop. I wasn't on any BC after my oldest so I can't compare to that either. I may have to stop taking it then. Poor DH no sex

If not being on it is an option for you then maybe just stop and find a LC to work with if you havent already. Best of luck its hard road.

I have never been able to pump lol but maybe quitting it is going to be my option because it seems the more I am reading online (now that it finally dawned on me after 3 months) about the mini pill affecting breastmilk, the more it seems like I am in the group who it does affect.

try block feeding or pumping first. he needs your let down. the first milk is thin and quenches their thirst the hindmilk has all the fat. he isnt getting the fat making him grouchy and hungry. stop formula. have him nurse from one breast like 3 feedings. then switch the other breast and do 3 feedings on that one. or try pumping b4 each feeding.

It is an option, just means no sex till I have regular periods and can chart since neither of us can stand condoms and I am not a fan of the other non-hormonal methods of BC. Bugs DH more than me though lol.

As for LC, I have one I can go see but I don't have the money to go and I have WIC but my next appointment isn't until January. I had no issues with my oldest when everyone thought I would (tongue-tied with the tip of his tongue to the top of his bottom gum) and we made it until 14 months and got his surgery at 9 months. He couldn't take bottles but he could nurse so go figure we beat those odds  Just this baby has been so much harder and you think you can handle everything with the 2nd well that just doesn't always happen!

I have tried all that already from the last time I posted about all this. None of it helped or else I wouldn't be posting again  I nursed my oldest until 14 months I know how breastfeeding works. I am just having issues this time around and it seems more and more from taking birth control, not from anything to do with my baby boy.
