Hampster questions

My wonderful mother bought one for my son for his birthday. Now what in the hell am I suppose to do with it? He's 4yrs old(on the 8th). We have a cat too. Am I suppose to take the thing to the vet? Is there even a vet for hampsters? I honestly have no clue and I never had one growing up. I'm a cat person, so I never really owned rat looking things. I owned a snake once but that's besides the point.

yes. My mom bought everything before she gave him to us. I am about to post a picture. He's fluffy as hell, I have never seen a hampster quite like this one before

They are low maintainence. Feed 'em, fresh bedding and be prepared to get him another for his next birthday cause they generally only live a year! (depending on breed...sometimes 2-3yrs)

pain in the ass, but cute. and yes vet's treat them. they are called pocket pets.

Ok well there's not much to do. Just feed & water it. Change its bedding. Make sure it has a wheel and a house/cave that it can hide in & get it a excercise ball that it can run around the house in

thats not always true, i had one for like 5 yrs. and no my mom didnt keep switching them out. lol

You really lucked out! Those suckers don't tend to live long!

I had 3 and they all lived between 1 and 2 and 1/2 years.

Well the first one my brother squeezed to death on accident(he was like 6 and trying to play with it) and the 2nd died of old age, and the 3rd was a nasty little thing that bit everyone so we just left it in the cage and fed it until it died.

They are very low maintanence.

I think I got another one, but then my ex husband bought me another one, so I had 2 but one ate the other, so we let it go rather than kill it.

thanks! yeah, that's true, I forgot about that part as well. He's so freakin' fluffy, I really didn't think they got that fluffy!. I am wondering if he's ever going to slim down cuz he's huge. He has a hard time getting through the tubes lol
