How cares what people think? If you don't want to help, you don't help, period. Its the same as the dollar dance. Completely voluntary.

I went to a friend's wedding in June, and she had the neatest way of calling people to the serving line. They called people from ALL tables, according to who knew the bride longest, and then who knew the groom longest. I was fairly quick because I had gone to high school with her. SO graciously waited until later because he was just my "+ 1" but that was by his own choice, not part of the "rules."

Nah....I was just at a wedding in May that they did this at and I didn't have any cash. It was my brother, sister in law and 3 friends. They didn't care that I didn't have any cash.

That's neat! I'll tell that to my husband to see about using!

Our Dj. Auctioned me and my groom off before the $1.00 dance. My brother was betting against my dad and I alone ended up making a few hundred dollars before the $1.00 dance itself!

and it might just be a SOIL thing, but people expect to give the bride and groom some money even if it is just a $1.00. It has nothing to do with being tacky. We did a gift registry, and didn't get sqwat. We ended up making about $1,600 bc that's what our friend and family wanted to give us. We don't force it. It's proper wedding etiquette around here!

I had never heard of a dollar dance. We didnt have an official one at all and i was just confused the whole time. my MIL had to explain it to me later.

When DH's uncle came up to me while i was finishing a dance withmy (male) best friend and handed me a $20 and asked me to dance I was like   But danced with him---2 minutes later grandpa came and gave me a $50 and cut in. I danced with 3-4 more people and noticed my DH's aunts all had taken their turns with him. And they'd stuffed money ito his uniform pockets---he wasin his Marine dress blues *swoon* (he got $5s and $10's).

I was just totally embarrassed to be being handed money and confused til after the wedding when I asked MiL

I honestly don't think it is tacky at all. When you go to a wedding people fork out a lot of money to feed you and make sure you have a good time. Giving them a small gift and a few bucks is part of it but it isn't an obligation. Hell dh and I spent thousands on our wedding and I think 4 people gave us a gift or money. We were just glad to share the day with people we loved. Most the time you don't get invited to a wedding if you are not important to the bride and/or groom in some way so you should want to help out if you can. Hell I am forking out a couple hundred for my bridesmaid dress for my sister's wedding, then the flower girl dress for my dd, a suit for my son who is going to be ring barer, I am throwing her a lingerie party, paying a photographer to take pics in her lingerie for a pre wedding "tease" gift for her fiance, and get her a wedding gift and cash for the honeymoon. And my soon-to-be broke ass is damn happy to do it too. lol

I'm saying that I would never do that at MY wedding. I personally think its tacky. If someone wanted to do it at theirs I would give them money. It's just not for me.
