How are we gonna tell him?

posted 2nd Dec
So it's been a rough day. We lost our 1 y/o Basset Hound today. We got him in March after my dog was killed by coyotes. We originally got him for DH but his 4 y/o son became very attached to him.

Luckily we didn't have DSS today, but now we have to break the news to him next weekend when he comes over. It breaks my heart. I don't know how we're going to tell him. How do you tell a 4 y/o that his best friend is gone forever?

Ugh this sucks

It's hard   my parents had to put their dog down and we had to try and explain it to my daughter. I told her that he's not here anymore and she kept asking. One day it was when we were outside and I pointed at the clouds and told her that he's up in the clouds looking down on her everyday. Then one day she surprised me, she asked me again while we were at my parents where he was and I said he's not here anymore and she looked at me and said "he's in heaven?" And I told her yes baby, he's in heaven. She hasn't asked since. I think she finally realized he was gone and she grew up knowing him. She was 3 almost 4. You just have to be honest and try different ways. He's gonna be heartbroken

He was hit.

I hope he takes it alright. His mom got him a kitten and I guess it ran away a few weeks ago. He never seemed to care. He just says she ran away and is playing in the woods. I think we'll just straight up tell him he's in doggy heaven.

I'm still in shock. DH hasn't even buried him yet. I think he's in denial.

OMG I am so sorry to hear about your dog =(
When we had to tell my DD about her hunny who passed away, we explained to her about animal heaven... I didnt wanna lie and make an excuse ya know. and she understands now that sometimes animals go to heaven...
I hope he doesnt take it to hard, maybe you can get him another puppy in the future.... obviously you cant truly replace your dog, but maybe in some time you can open your home to a new dog or puppy that needs a home.

Thank you.

DH doesn't want to tell him he died. He's going to tell him he missed his mommy and daddy so he went to stay with him and we will have a new puppy come stay with us soon.

DH is already looking at dogs, though I think we should wait a little.

Aww yea i understand what you mean about waiting before you get another dog, sometimes it helps to wait til your healed from the loss of one, but also sometimes getting another soon after can help you heal and move on.. as you know i have 4 dogs. and will be getting my 5th next yr... the thought of not being surrounded by dogs, makes me sad =( i just love coming home to a bunch of furbabies.. not just one, a few lol.
but give it some time and thought, let her DH look at some dogs, and you never know, maybe youll see one that catches your eye =)

Yeah DH says he feels bad getting one so soon but he can't go without a dog. So this weekend we're going to look at some Basset puppies.
