Psychology Majors...

posted 2nd Dec
Does anyone have a Bachelors in Science/Arts with a major in Psychology.. I was wondering if you found good career options and was wondering if there was an available online school to get a Masters or higher.. etc.. I'm just trying to decide and still am going back and forth between nursing and psychology :-/

Psychology jobs are going to require a minimum of a master's degree, with the best jobs going to those with doctorates. I have a BS in psychology. I was going into a PhD program but being single with a surprise pregnancy, I wasn't able to go. I managed to find a job in the field, but it wasn't really a good job and my degree wasn't necessary for it at all. My supervisor was my age, had a GED and made $4 more an hour than I did. I worked in psychotropic drug research.

If you aren't going to grad school, don't bother with psychology.

Hi! I have a bachelors of science in psychology. I went on to graduate school for professional counseling, but due to my husband's medical issues I switched due to not being able to travel to my classes. I am not getting my teaching certificate with a master's in special education. I LOVE psychology - loved learning about it and I really have a passion for it. Only certain people can love psychology as I have many friends who hate it. But I love it so much!! I could go on and on lol If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me!

p.s. there are a TON of options for psych majors!

Edit: yes there are schools online and campuses that typically do psychology online for bachelors and even masters. just depends what you want your field to be in. Also - you are almost required (if you want the good pay) to get a masters in something after your bachelors.

My Bachelor's is not in Psychology, but if I'm ever able to go back, I'm going to do a combined Masters/PhD in Forensic Psych.

No, you can get masters degrees in psychology related fields. You just won't be a doctor. You can do counseling be a LPC or school psychology and be a guidance counselor.

ETA- I meant you can do them on campus at legit universities and colleges, not just online

I didn't think she was asking if she was a doctor, just if there were online schools?

I would never, personally, do online schooling.

yes, this. You can get a good job with a masters without having to be a doctorate in something. I have many friends that went in the Mental Health Counseling program after their bachelors degrees. You can also do professional counseling, therapy, teaching, etc.

Oooh, I see

Well I do know that a girl I worked with at my old job had a masters in public health from University of Phoenix, but she also had another masters in something else from Ole Miss so it was just an additional degree.

Neither would I. I don't trust online schools and they don't look as good on resumes even if they are "accredited".

I do online schooling through an accredited university and i love it. I'm a SAHM with a handicapped husband and it was my only option. As long as you are well-rounded in the program meaning you have a strong background and you are independent and motivated, it's a great thing. I'm doing my online schooling through the campus here in my town but I have friends that are doing theirs through Walden University - an online school which also offers financial aid.

I gotcha. Yeah, I was definitely speaking in general terms..... I don't think psychology is the best field to learn through online courses.

I've seen a few Masters programs offered online in the psychology-related-fields. Some entirely remotely, some you have to go to the campus for certain things.

That's not true. Taking online classes are HARDER than going to actual classes because you have to be your own teacher sometimes, be motivated, independent, and be good at time management. Plus, unless you specify that you did classes online on your resume, the employer won't know either way. You can take online classes through an actual university in your area and it won't make any difference to the employer. I have been in school since 2006 (got my bachelors in 2010) and am now doing my masters online and I have heard that employers aren't swayed either or - I had great advisors. One of my teachers was actually doing her Ph.D. at Walden University (an online campus) as she was teaching as well.
