Like I said in my other post, most government agencies will not take a degree from an online school unless it is an entry level position. They specifically ask you WHICH school you graduated from. They aren't going to give the same consideration to someone who went to a state school (OU, OSU, UT, etc) versus a private school (Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Rice, etc), either.

CIA, FBI, National Archives, Smithsonian, USDA, FDA, Capitol Hill, etc.

That's why we do human relations, field experience, and clinicals. Being in a chair in a classroom hearing lectures isn't any different than reading the book yourself and doing the assignments. I go to Marian University - which the school i graduated from for my bachelors and now I'm getting my certification there with a master's. Unless I put ONLINE on my resume, no one will even know. It's literally 5 mins from my house so it's an actual campus.

I really don't see how anyone could do a masters or doctorate degree completely online for psychology bc you have to do a practicum or internship to graduate. A lot of hands-on experience is necessary to graduate. Not to mention if you're doing a doctorate you have to research and write a thesis, and present it to the board to even get your degree.

Lol, it'll say on your transcript that you never entered a classroom.

Exactly, I was actually under the impression that you couldn't get higher than an AA online, but I guess I'm wrong about that. I don't see the point though, if you're 5 minutes away from campus, just go to class.

A lot of online schools are considered private schools. You can take online classes through an actual campus. I graduated with my bachelors from a private school and am currently doing online classes through the same school for my graduate courses. If you're going for counseling or whatever, most hospitals or state run agencies will hire you for the impressive background and references you have. And personally, each state and job will be different I am sure. I have never heard of not getting a job due to your "online" education. Maybe it happens, but I wouldn't consider it a bad thing going through online classes. If it were bad, there wouldn't be such large market for online classes/schools.

The classes I needed were only available online otherwise I would've loved to go to class (gets me out of the house). Yes you can do your masters and PhD online - check out Walden University. One of the best online schools for masters and phd courses and its accredited and accepted for getting your degree and jobs. I have professors (that only had a masters when teaching) and class mates doing just that.

I will say this though, this semester I took 3 classes online to prep for taking my PRAXIS exam and doing online classes IS hard. I missed classroom discussion, and I definitely missed having a teacher explain what they want out of assignments. Once of my teachers was horrible are giving directions. I graduated from a private college cum laude with a BS in psychology, and I failed a literature test from an online community college because of bad instruction lol. I've never made anything below a B in my life until that class. I gave her a BAD review too.

Well...

Lots of things are bad but there's a market for them, so that argument is silly. A lot of people think its easier to do online school because you never have to get dressed or be on time. That's why there's a market for it. I'm not saying it's bad because I just don't have any factual information to back that up. Aside from the fact that we would never hire someone with an online degree at my firm.

There's a large market because people will pay for it. There's a large market for crack cocaine, but it's bad.

You are talking measly state and entry level jobs. Try working at a higher level and people will laugh at you. And, your transcripts WILL say that it is an online class and if all of your classes are online, they will assume you went to an online school.

Nope. I'm attending the same college I got my bachelors in. It doesn't specify any of that. I can see my transcript right online actually and print it off if needed and when I ask for an official transcript it doesn't say online versus classroom. And actually I will enter a classroom. Since I'm doing teaching, I will do student teaching, field experiences, and a human relations. For psychology at least, you learn from the text book, there's hardly any "hands on" work considering you are learning theories and analyzing case studies. These are all things that can be done online - I have learned more this semester online being that I had to read the book on my own, and answer my own questions than I would've in an actual classroom. It's personal preference - doing classroom work allows for you to discuss and ask questions but if you can't go to class or it isn't offered at campus, online isn't any less better than doing classroom work. IMO.

edit: and I've done both classroom and online for bachelors and masters.

I wish there was a way for me to legitimately get my PhD online, but it's not practical. So, I'm going to leave my daughter for a year to get it done.

What looks better? PhD in Anthro online with local dig experience. OR, PhD from the NIAS with field/dig experience at an internationally recognized site.

I guess it depends on where you want to work, what they require and what works best for your family. I have a great network and references, so I'm not really worried. Either way, I enjoy staying home right now and we are TTC so I'm in no hurry to finish. We are making it fine on just one income, and I can do my classes at my own rate right now. So it's just personal preference IMO and really depends where you want to end up.

I think it differs from employer to employer. Anyone looking to find a job after school should do research as to what jobs accept what education. Since I'm doing teaching with special education, I just need references, my student teaching, and my field experience. I'm not too worried - I'm not looking to work that high up anyways, so that's why I chose the route I chose. Everyone and job is going to be different anyways. I did 4.5 years in the classroom. Good enough for me.

Yep. That's what it really depends on. I want to strive for the highest and the best and I won't be stuck working in a tiny, smurffy museum in Oklahoma. I really want my own show on the History Channel, but I will settle with the Smithsonian for the time being.
