Water broke and contractions stopped

posted 2nd Dec
So my water broke during my nap last afternoon. I actually went to sleep for said nap kind of bummed because the contractions I had been having for more than a week more or less stopped.
Well, they've just continued to diminish. They're stronger but extremely spaced out and irregular. My midwife wants to start Picotin in a few hours and even though I didn't want any drugs I'll probably agree since my son was born with a fever that likely was caused by being in too long after my water broke.
I really suck at this giving birth stuff.

Regardless of pitocin or not, you can still have a healing and spiritual birth. Make it your own! Take what you need to make the birth suite a nice environment, dress in some of your comfiest clothes, have a loving support with you and nice music.

I had to be induced 30 hours after my water broke with my son. I was upset but I still had the birth I (more or less) wanted.

Good luck and all the best.

I hope you're right. I really don't want to get an epidural again and it seems like everyone gets one after starting picotin. Ugh.

I didbt the same thing with my girls I was having contractions all the way up to the point my water broke, once it broke everything stopped. It sucked I had to be put on pitocin each time but they waited about 3 to 4 hours to see if the contractions would start back up themselves but they never did. I wouldn't be to worried the baby is suppost to be born within 24 hours of the water braking so the baby don't get an infection. I was born 36 hours or longer after my moms water broke and had to be in the nicu for two weeks.

As for the epidural you can always try not to get it but being on pitocin it does hurt so much more. But do your best you can do it. Good luck.

I didn't and my son was posterior too! It was really tough plus I'm a wimp, so if I can do it - you can too.

Make sure you let all the midwives know to not offer any pain relief and if you ask for any for them to provide you with alternatives and support before acquiescing to your request .

e.g. You say "I want an epidural!" they say "Move position, take a shower, let's try counter pressure, you're doing great, baby will be here soon" etc. etc.

I just wanted to say the 24 hr rule on water breaking is not standard - that is a US rule. It would be best to not check dilation - THAT is where bacteria gets introduced - but sticking things (hands) into the vagina after the water breaks.

Quote:

When the water breaks before the onset of labor this is called premature rupture of membranes (PROM). PROM occurs in 8-10% of term (37 weeks+) pregnancies. Of those, 90% will begin labor within 48 hours. Unless you or your baby is in some kind of danger or you are showing signs of infection, there is no reason to speed up this process. Many mainstream pregnancy books and most OB’s will tell you to go straight to the hospital and what we see in movies confirms that but you actually increase your risk of infection by doing that because the first thing that happens when you arrive is usually a vaginal exam. Interestingly enough, the recommendations are to avoid digital (finger) vaginal exams but anyone who has had a hospital birth knows that this is the first thing that happens upon admission. Vaginal exams push bacteria up past the cervix. Fluids in the vagina flow downstream and the only way they will back track is if they are pushed back. In a hospital setting it is not uncommon to have a vaginal check hourly or even more frequently and by several different people. Every time a vaginal exam is performed the infection risk is increased.
