colds in 3 month olds

posted 2nd Dec
My son will be 3 months in a week and my husband has had a cold the past couple of days. Today Alex starting coughing a little and I can tell from his breathing that his nose is stuffy. When should you take them to the doctor for a cold? He goes back for his 3 month check up the week after this week.

Hes been really fussy the past 2 days and seemed kinda hot last night. We tried to take his temp but couldn't get a full one done bc he was squirming so much and crying. It was only 98.9. During the day he hasn't been sleeping at all which is unusual.

They can't do anything for a cold unless the symptoms get worse and cause breathing problems or other symptoms. Saline to suck out the nose, humidifier in the room, turn the shower on hot and sit in the bath room. baby vicks rub on the feet then put socks on. Lots of cuddles and thats about all you can do. Most colds are viruses and nothing but time will treat it.

Ok that's about what I thought, just wondering what happens if it gets worse or when to take him to the doctor. Thank you

This is everything I did with my LO. The pediatrician said that is really all you can do. If the baby is running a fever of over 101, take him to the doctor though. Anything less than that, you can fill a baby bath with water that is just a little warmer than room temperature and sponge him down. If he starts to shiver, take him out right away. Shivering makes a fever worse.

If you use Vics, the doctors tell you to put it on the bottoms of their feet. And only use a little bit!

the warm bath helped loosen stuff up in the chest. Its a good thiing. So the baby can cough it out easier.

Does he sound congested? You can lay him on his tummy and pat his back like you would during burping time. This should loosen up any phlegm.
