re: when do u learn how to take care of a baby

posted 1st Dec
wen i had my son at 16 they showed me how to change his diaper, and how to feed him and what to do went he cried and all that stuff. theres alot of nurses at the hospital, there there to help you.

theres also alot of books you can read, things online you can look at, classes you can take. if you have questions feel free to ask. even if it seems like a stupid question. we were all there once.

Quoting MX23:" ok im a guy my gf is preganant. we are 17. i have no idea about babys at all and she cant either. i ... [snip!] ... to feed it? and like how to change a diaper and when to make it go to bed. like how much sleep do they need. stuff like that. "

You can rent videos and practice on baby dolls. But you can just do like most people and take classes. Find where they do classes in your local area. If you are not sure where to start, go to the local WIC /Health Department and ask. They will get you going in the right direction. However most of your lessons will come from your baby when baby gets here.
Props to you for being such a good and proactive daddy.
You are going to make a wonderful father.

Everyone who has posted offers great advice already. Read, sign up for parenting classes, most all hospitals offer something, even WIC can direct you to classes for free. In the end, it will not truly prepare you until you have a live, living baby and learn to roll with the punches.

Newborns are actually pretty easy as far as figuring out what they want. They either want to eat, sleep, or need to be changed. They make a lot of noise to let you know when any of those problems are going on.   At the hospital, they'll help you change your first diaper and how to use bottles or breastfeed if your gf is going to do that. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. It normally comes pretty naturally. They do have parenting classes through the hospitals and there are about a million parenting books out there and websites. The most common book that comes to mind is 'What to expect when you're expecting'. Even the moms who have their babies at 35 have to be first time moms at some point. We learn from trial and error, just like you 2 will.

I would look into teen parenting classes that are available... they will teach you want you need to know about the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and baby care... many doctors can tell you where they are located and how to register...

As everyone else said you can take classes. I must say you are ahead of some just by asking questions but most do fine.

Try looking into some classes at the hospital too. The nurses will teach you basic things like how to bathe him/her, change diapers, etc. But here they also offer baby basics classes and such. Honestly though, so much of it will come naturally.

when my son was born they showed me how to change his diaper (which i already knew), but they told me to make sure his weewee is facing down otherwise he will pee all over himselfe, regardless if he ahs a diaper on or not, also sponge baths without getting the umbilical cord wet untill it falls off, and youll learn about feeding, youll get into a routine, DS eats 6 ounces every 3-4 hours and eats a little bit of cereal mixed with apple sauce once a day, but thats not recomended untill at least 4 months.
