single moms how do you do it?

posted 1st Dec
So if you are a single mom with no help how do you do it? How much do you make and how much do you spend? Who watches your child. I am talking to people who live alone, pay rent/mortgage, no Medicaid or government assistance, no free child care or family members who watch your child. How do you pay bills, insurance, car, rent, food, diapers, daycare or baby sitter, food...

Please tell me how bc I can't figure out how to do it. I don't have help and I'm having a hard time with this. My mom helped watch my child for free now she doesn't.

I couldn't do it without government assistance. So I guess I don't apply to this... but I recommend getting a best beginings scholarship... The school at my college watches my girlies for free. Which is a life saver. Government assistance is there for help... if you genuinely need help then get it.

I'm no longer a single mom but was one when LO was about six months. I always had the help of my parents but was too hard headed and thought I could do anything on my own. I was wrong but still worked my ass off, sometimes double shifts and would do what I could to work at least 60hours a week. Bought nothing but the things we needed. Lived in a crappy and small ass apartment where rent was 500 all bills paid. Then one day, I decided to invest in a business talked to a few people and made it happened with help from people I knew of course and my life took a dramatic turn.

make a buttload of money? I did the single thing for 4 years. But I had gov't help with daycare, worked 50+ hours a week, and barely saw my kid. My car was paid outright, health insurance was through work, bills and groceries and everything were paid from my check.

I don't qualify for any assistance at all.

Not everyone qualifies for government assistance though. Cheap housing is key imo. I'm not a single mom but we live on one income with no government assistance and have to put our child in daycare part time while I'm in class. We don't have car loans and found a great deal on a duplex which has made things very doable

I needed government assistance (no child support). I had child care assistance (made my payments $99 per week instead of $145), subsidized housing (585 per month instead of 850), and Medicaid. I worked full time making $9 an hour and literally every dime I made pretty much went to bills. It was very stressful, but even though I'm in a MUCH better situation now and have help, I know I CAN do it alone if I need to. It is very hard, but doable. Accept help and resources that are there for you.

A scholoarship is different though. There are many factors that help with being able to get free daycare, and in my city you just have to be a single mom making less then 3,000 a month or a single mom who goes to work for atleast 10 hours a week and goes to school

Who watched your child while you worked all those hours?

What kind of business did you start?

how is that possible? I made 15/hr and pulled in a good deal of money, and still qualified for daycare assistance.

Oh man   I mean so you make decent money then right? I would just try to cut corners where possible, cheaper housing, downgrade on your vehicle maybe, shop around for cheaper insurance, coupons, in home childcare, etc.

Go to college loans and grants are a great helper it will cover your whole tuition, and the rest of the loan that is left over you can use for what the loan company calls living expenses and that is how I make due as well as working and having my mom help out as much as she can with daycare then I also send my child to a daycare that is a pay by day so I don't get stuck paying a bunch of money that is being wasted because my child doesn't go enough to warrant it. meaning they charge so much for three days or less and so much for 3 days and more my son goes one day so by day is a better option for me.

As for rent I use to pay my rent all on my own but my mom told me i could move back home as i finish my degree and I give her so much a month for rent $100 and then i cover my own food, phone and what not.

I just recently became not single.

But, when I was, I was lucky. I got a job that paid a lot. But I had to work past 6 so I luckily found a daycare, a drop in daycare, that was open until 10pm. Because my work would NOT give me an adjusted schedule where I only worked til 6. I got the cheapest 1 bedroom apartment in a nice area. A cheap car I paid cash for. Daycare was costing a tonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. It was an hourly rate. And my checks are commission so they were always so random. But I had NO help, no one. Parents like 1400 miles away, not that it's their responsibilty. But I envy the people who's parents babysit for them.
I was exhausted, and overworked and broke. But my smurf was all paid for. I just prioritized. Didn't go out, didn't buy stuff. My apartments paid for cable and a coworker gave me an old tv. I used internet at work until I could afford it myself. Stuff like that. I sacrificed a lot, but I was happy to come home to my own place, just me and my daughter.
