Winter Coats & Carseat Safety. *Vent*

posted 1st Dec
So this is really more of a vent than anything.
We went over my MIL house a few days ago and the first thing she said was "that's all she has on in this cold". I explained to her way she didn't have a winter coat on but...
My DD2 is 11 months old and since it's gotten cold we dress her in layers rather than a big bulky coat because I don't believe it's safe for her in the carseat with a winter coat on because the straps aren't tight on her chest like they should be. DD had on a longsleeve undershirt, a longsleeve shirt and a cotton windbreaker with a hat and the hat that went on the windbreaker on too.
So skip to today, she calls DH and ask him what size she is because she wants to get her a winter coat, insinuating DD doesn't have a coat because we can't afford one. She has pissed me off!
*edit* DD was also wrapped in a fleece blanket.

You don't know that her buying a winter coat is insinuating that you can't afford one. She just thinks the child needs a coat, and knows that you don't.

You should just put a winter coat on over the straps, backwards with her arms in the sleeves. Or at least put a blanket on her.

I would be upset as well. All of my kids have winter coats though, they just wear them backwards. Old people are often set in their ways and do not always udnerstand things like this.

You are correct, babies aren't supposed to wear winter coats in the car seat. You can dress LO a bit warmer in the car after driving, but sounds like baby is warm enough already. No worries mama, you're doing the right thing!

DD was wrapped in a fleece blanket also.
MIL didn't directly come out and say that she thinks we can't afford one but her facial expressions and remarks as I was explaining why DD didn't have a winter coat on pretty much indicated that. Almost like she thought I was just talking out of my ass because I didn't want to buy her one.

had a woman tell me once that DD needed a coat when it was still early fall and 70 outside. she was in her carseat and had pants, sock and a long sleeve on. i tried to explain how babies easily over heat and SIDS... older generations dont have a clue... my SO's grandmother one time told me not to let our cat near our baby because it will suck the breath from DD... lol
