Breastfeeding moms

posted 1st Dec
I just had my baby yesterday, not even 24 hours ago and I was wanting to know what helped you pump and get milk to come in for your preemie? Im gonna try today now that im not so drained and to see if I can get something out for her and I want my supply to start coming in as soon as possible.. I dont want to have to bottle feed her!

Tips and Tricks?

Kinda like the concept of supply and demand? I never breastfed long with my other two and this one im bound and determined to make it work.

I'm going to have a preemie too so I really should research it. But yeah I think just supply and demand. If u can nurse in the room so you can see her that might help too. Or at least look at her pic.

Shes still in an incubator to help maintain her body temp... I know being around a crying baby helps but she really hasnt made noise much. She came out kicking and punching.. lol

Its fine if she's in the incubator. Just so u can see her. That seems to help moms produce milk.

It took a week for my milk to come in. I drank fenugreek tea a lot, pumped when she wasn't trying to nurse and ate lentils and toasted semolina. Everyone, including my mother, LC, DH and MIL gave up hope that my milk was going to come in except me.

Im going to attempt before and after to see if there is a difference!

You can hand express while you're waiting for your milk to come in, and give Baby the colostrum. You could probably pump instead of hand express, but I get a lot of milk stuck in the pump when I pump and because there's such a small amount of colostrum, I'd be worried about losing it. You don't need to formula feed just because baby is a preemie. Congrats btw, and how early?

It took almost a full week for my milk to come in, but I pumped every three hours regardless. The colostrum I could get out was only enough to make the flanges wet the first few days. Don't waste that though! Get a little syringe and suck it up. There were several times my daughter only like a 16th of an oz.

One thing that really hurt me was the nicu was on a very strict three hour feeding schedule and if it took my daughter more than 20 minutes to breastfeed they would make me stop and give her formula. I was too scared to stand up to them because of everything we had just been through. I figure they'd know better than me what my little preemie needed. In the end it hurt our breastfeeding relationship and it took me a full month to not have to supplement anymore.

After she got home, I nursed on demand and right after I would immediately pump each side for 20 minutes and then give what I pumped to her, and later on I was able to start storing it. I even pumped after each nursing at night.

I also took three fenugreek tablets three times a day and drank mothers milk tea. 13 months later, we are still going strong!

If your LO is having any trouble sucking, try a shield. I know people say good and bad things about them but it was the only way my LO could get anything for the first few months and then I was able to get rid of it.

Best of luck!
