Teens, drugs & alcohol.

posted 30th Nov
So there was this debate going on in Facebook and I just want to get your opinion. The way I see it, is we all be there or have known someone who's been there but a lot if not most teenagers will drink alcohol or do drugs once in their life time so I was wondering. Would you tell you kids or allow your kids to drink or do drugs at home rather than going out behind your back and doing them or do you feel that would be irresponsible?

I would hope that I raised my children better to stay away from alcohol until they're of legal age and to stay away from any and all hard drugs.
If they wanted to smoke weed? If it's legal here by that point, as long as they're smart about it, I would let them know that's fine so they didn't feel the need to do it behind my back. If it's not, I would hope they make the right choice. Only because of the legality factor.

Yeah, I'm going to allow my kids to do crack because ya know, I'd rather them do it under my roof

No. They will be taught and allowed to drink moderately in the house. No drugs. We will make sure that they are aware of peer pressure and how to rise above it.

I'd rather have them do it at home. When my daughter is waaay older, if she wants to try a beer with me I'll be ok with it. Hopefully she'll hate it and never want to try another

My boyfriends father told him that if he wanted to do anything, try anything etc, to just let him know and they would do it together in a safe setting. There was a limit of course, his dad didn't mean he was gonna pop E with him if he wanted to but smoking cigs/weed, drinking, light stuff like that....he rather have him do it at home then out on the streets. I thought that was a very good idea and will probably do that with my own when she gets old enough because most of the time, if they want to do it they're going to do it. Having good communication with your child and establishing that comfortable atmosphere (like my mom gave me) with them will make it less likely that they'll be out on the streets getting into trouble with it. Atleast that's what i've seen in my experience.

I think if you're open with your kids and are someone they feel comfortable talking to and confiding in they're willing to ask you about things like alcohol before trying it instead of sneaking behind your back. I was always very willing to ask my dad about sex and alcohol because he made me feel like he was open minded and wouldn't be angry if I had questions. Unfortunately he lives in Canada and has for many, many years and my mom is an ignorant, close minded bitch so I went behind her back all the time. I never did any drugs but I did have sex too early and I started smoking at 14 and I started drinking at 16. If my kids come to me curious about alcohol I will make sure they know I'm glad they asked me instead of finding out on their own and I will let them have a drink with me at home. Drugs are out of the question.

EDIT: This isn't to say I am going to let them get wasted in my house. But if they want to try a bear or two or try wine I'm not going to make it seem like it's extremely taboo, because for me that just made it more appealing. The more my mom tried to make something seem bad the more I wanted to do it to piss her off. I hated my mom, though.

I see the logic in it but no. I mean, I don't mind letting my kids try wine or beer. The beverage industry is very closely related to the one I'm in so I do want to foster appreciation, just not obliteration.

Just because we're scared of all the things our teens might do behind our backs doesn't mean we don't get to have standards at home. That's what consequences are for.

No..i hope i can teach my children not to drink before legal age and never to do drugs. It can be done because i have known kids that haven't. I will teach my children about peer pressure and consequences. I will also explain to them never to drive drunk or get in the car with someone drunk...my mother told me never to drink under age but if i found myself in the situation..to always call her...dont drive drunk or with someone else who is...i will say the same to my children. i refuse to use the excuse " well they do it anyway might as well do it at home where they are safe" as an excuse to provide drugs or alcohol to my teenagers

This. I will be more than happy to let my kids try light stuff under my roof in a safe setting. After that I hope I raise them so that they use their common sense not to do anything illegal. DH's mom told him that if he wanted to drink use your brain and don't drive or get in the car with anyone who has been drinking. I feel the same way.

No, I won't. Just like driving, or getting a tattoo, they may wait until they can legally do so.
