Just wondering... do any of you believe that 'stealing' names from someone is wrong?

Names can't be stolen.

Exactly. So why is it such a big deal when a girl is named a boy's name? I don't understand.

It's using the same name on the opposite sex.
What's so wrong with it?

Because girls named Scott, John, Ralph, Edward, etc sound ridiculous. Not to mention everyone will think they are a man on paper before they meet them. Besides THAT, what if she's a tomboy? What if she's just frumpy and ugly? Little girls aren't forever cute. "Frankie" might be cute on a lovely little pigtailed 4 year old, but when she grows up and maybe has facial hair and no waist, people are constantly gonna wonder if she's a she or a he.

Ever seen the SNL skit "Pat"?

Aside from the fact that it's an awful trend that's going to look incredibly stupid in a few years - it's not exactly fair to your daughter. Why, when there are a million other feminine names to choose from would you give her a male name? Would you give your son a very feminine name? No? So why is it ok for a girl to have a masculine one? It's such a huge double standard.

Names can't be stolen.

To name a girl a boys name or vice versa is just wrong.

Because it's apparently not okay to give boys girls' names. If it went both ways, no problem, but the fact remains: girls are given boy names and very few, if any, boys are given girl names.

I've seen people post polls on here just to see what people would say. A lot were okay with Addison, James, Dane, etc. on girls. But the results were the opposite for girl names on boys, even names like Shannon and Morgan which had a history of being masculine names.

I have a daughter with a boy's name, and I would name my son (if I had one) any name I so choose. I never understood that "He has a girl's name" thing. They're just names.

You can name your kid whatever you want, of course.

The OP asked -specifically-if it worked on a girl, and people answered accordingly. Nobody said anything about anyone not being allowed to use a name, just that, to a lot of people, it's a stupid thing to do.
