Getting tonsils out!

posted 30th Nov
If your child got their tonsils and adenoids (sp?) removed, how was the recovery?

The doc told me that it's only a 30 minute procedure, so that's not what I'm worried about. But she also mentioned the average weight loss was 4-6 lbs. and that he can only eat soft foods (no meat, salt, nothing) and liquids. She said this would last about 2 weeks.

Is it really that bad? How quickly does it really heal?

For most its fairly easy. There is pain but keep up on the meds and you'll be fine.

my son had this done (along with tubes) when he was 3 1/2. recovery was about a week, maybe longer. he basically lived off ice cream and non-red popsicles for a while.

I'm just worried because R just turned 3 and it's hard to explain to him what's going on. All they're giving him is Tylenol, is that enough?

So he really didn't want to eat? That's the part that scares me the most. How long until he was on normal foods again?

All I can tell you is that DH had his tonsils out in Feb. and recovery was absolute hell for him. He was 24 at the time. His doctor said that 6 year olds leave and want chicken nuggets on the way home, lol. He kept having bleeding and was getting dehydrated because even With the pain medicine, the pain was too much for him to even eat a popsicle. My sister got hers out when she was five and a week later she was totally back to normal. I would just go ahead and get it out-of-the-way for him if I were you.

he wanted to eat, but knew it would hurt. after that first week, he was eating more soft foods, and back on his normal diet after about 2-3 weeks.

We are getting them out. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. I hope he has a speedy recovery. He had surgery about a year and half ago on his stomach and was up walking 2 hours later no problem.

That makes me sad. But at least I can get away with buying tons of ice cream.

My sons first surgery was aroun that age and it was not too hard, they will cry and be scared, but most kids are regardless f age. For the first two days we used the Vicodin they gave us ( my friends daughter got the same meds) and the othe days I used tykenol and he was ok. We were actually in the hospital for 2 days though. But Tylenol should be okay.

See, she said they normally prescribe Tylenol with codeine but R can't throw up due to previous stomach surgeries - so now it's just plain Tylenol. I'm sure he will be fine, I think it's scaring me more though.

ETA: Is it routine to stay in the hospital that long? She told me it's outpatient procedure and just at a little surgery center in our city.

my son's was outpatient. he went in at around 7 that morning and was home by lunch.. maybe even earlier. I know they made him stay there for observation for a little bit.

Hm she never mentioned the no dairy, she just said wash everything down with water after so it stays clean. But they are going to go over everything on the actual surgery date so I will bring it up. She gave me a huge list of stuff that he's allowed to eat and most of it is liquids and dairy products (milk, yogurt, eggs, mac&cheese, ect.)

I figured we would be there a few hours. We have to check in an hour before the procedure and then observe him after he wakes from anesthesia, especially with his history.
