Fear of the dark

posted 30th Nov
Can newborns be scared of the dark? If not, does that means that the fear of the dark is classical conditioning from movies and TV shows?

I am not sure.

One would think a newborn wouldn't be afraid of the dark though. They have spent nine months in some serious darkness lol

I'm afraid of the dark though

I would think that would be it. I mean, they spent all that time being inside mum and all of a sudden mum isn't RIGHT THERE ALL THE TIME. That has to be pretty hard to adjust to

Yeah I didn't realize that it was possible until my Lo started acting like that. She would wake up a lot in the night and scream like she was panicking. She did this multiple times. We finallhy put a small lamp in her room that we keep on 24/7 and she doesn't do it at all anymore. I will hear her wake up on the baby monitor but she just plays until she falls back asleep. She is now 11 months.

See I have this morbid thought. What if you took 10 kids, that 5 of them and never expose them to any TV or book were the characters were scared of the dark. The other 5.....I haven't gotten that far.

Um...I want to say no?
But I know I'm a little scared of the dark.
Heathen is now 4 and freaks if her night light isn't on. It's been in there since she's been born, mostly for me when I'd nurse at night and changings. She got used to it, and if it's not on...freaks.

I don't think having a fear of the dark comes from movies and TV shows but from a fear of the unknown.

My fear of the dark comes from KNOWING what can be in the dark.
