Advice on weight loss...

posted 30th Nov
First, I'm being a post whore today. For that, I'm sorry.

But, I have a dilemma. Kind of.
I'm 4"11 and weigh 191 lbs. I have only lost 10lbs in a year. But, I also only made slight changes in my diet.
About this time last year I found out I have thyroid disease and a liver disease. That made me change my diet, and I quit eating fried foods. I also cut down my portions. I had lost 5 lbs in like a month, then I kind of plateaued and have only lost 5 more pounds since then.
I have a bad knee and bad wrist, so it's hard to do much exercise.
Are there any exercises that anyone knows of that I can do without hurting myself again?
I don't eat sweets hardly at all, and I've switched from regular Dr. Pepper to the Dr Pepper Ten and I also drink the Diet White Raspberry Tea (by Lipton).
I'm not really sure what else to do. I can't do water, it gives me heartburn. Don't ask...I don't know why it does.... That's why I drink the diet tea...for some reason I think it does the same that water would. (I know it doesn't.)

So, anyway, I want to lose another, AT LEAST, 50lbs.....any advice on what to do about my exercise ordeal?

Walk. Walk everywhere you can, whenever you can.

You will drop weight with virtually no effort, at first. Your body will get used to moving more, so you'll have to up your game after a while....BUT...you will also have jump started your metabolism, which burns more calories, even when you are sitting on your couch.

It totally works.

My older sister struggles with her thyroid and she has cut out all red meats in her diet. She does spinach salads instead of lettuce. I know she eats a lot of seafood. Bakes everything or grills. Never fried food. She only drinks 1 coke a day. She also drinks tea. Hot or cold. She just had knee surgery and walks about 2 maybe 3 times a week of at least 30 mins. Also, try walking in place or around the house during commercials if you're watching TV my mom does that and is slowly losing weight. Good luck!

LOTS of walking. Thinka bout getting a fitbit or a regular pedometer. When you track steps it's a lot easier to keep increasing them!

Now, for the part you don't want to hear, okay? Diet is horrible for you. It really is. Those fake sugars are BAD. They've done studies that show that people who drink diet soda tend to weigh more then those who drink regular, and diet doesn't help them lose at all. It's really really bad. Maybe try to drink regular ice tea unsweetened? Maybe try giving water another try. Really, all those fake sugars (especially if you aren't drinking water) are really really bad.

Next, take a week and track what you eat. EVERYTHING. Write it all down. We are often eating a lot worse then we think we are. I find writing it down helps you be really honest with yourself.

This is all great advice.

Have you tried a weight loss program? Weight watchers is great especially if you can go to local meetings... it really helps the weight fall off and helps you work through and plateaus you hit. I lost 50 lbs with them 2 years ago... now after having DS I'm going to sign up again so I can get to my goal weight

LOVEEEEEEE this video! someone else posted it on here and it has motivated me entirely. OP, just try doing easy things at first. You can do it! Also, maybe try to cut the soda back, or eliminate it all together?

In the last year I've really really overhauled how I eat and live. I've lost weight, but the BIGGEST change is in my lifestyle. I always said "I don't eat that bad." I didn't even realize how horribly I ate until I really really looked at it. Now I can't even believe how much I used to eat and the amount of junk food I had. A little here, a little there. Portions that were WAY too big.

It's hard to change your lifestyle, but SO worth it. I may not be where I want to be yet, but I'm a lot closer then I was a year ago =D

To add to this, you can simply go on your own type of "program", meaning: Buy yourself some Lean Cuisine's or Healthy Choice meals. It's exactly like Jenny Craig. Preportioned, calories counted, type of meals. They are a no-brainer.

Ashley- try water at a different temperature. Cold water is supposed to be best for boosting metabolism. If it still gives you heartburn, maybe think about taking a daily anti-heartburn med. I'm a big believer in water. When I drink it, I feel great- when I don't, I'm a schlub. I also take anti-heartburn pills twice a day.

You know, the problem with "programs" is that, unless you plan on living on ___________ (your program of choice), for the rest of your life, you'll have to adjust into preparing meals yourself, along with lifestyle changes, if you want to keep weight off.

Your way is better, BY FAR.

Congratulations on your success and determination. You gotta dig deep to make those kinds of changes and I commend you for doing it.

It's really amazing the difference a food log can make. Not only with calories but with how you relate to food. You start to realize what foods fill you up vs. what it easy. Proteins instead of sugars and the such...

When I'm hungry for a snack now, I think about it and make a better choice. Almonds over graham crackers, apples over cereal bars, etc.

It's amazing how those little things add up.
