DD is starting School....I knew this day would come :(

posted 30th Nov
Adina and I went to the local Elementary school yesterday to continue testingfor learning disabilities etc. I've feared that she has something going on, so I wanted to look into it. I was told that she is very advanced for a 3 year old- closer to a 5 year old intellectually, I already figured that- but there are some concerns that she has a bit of a sensory disorder- not much, but enough that it causes her to overreact to most situations. So all in all, it went very well.

While we were there, I noticed how happy she was...she was so excited to be around the other kids and the teachers, the school serves Pre-K to 5th grade, so she was in awe of all the kids. Anyways, the people testing her started talking to me about enrolling her, as they have been trying to get me to do for months now (She has been homeschooled with a teacher through the school for the last few months), I just didn't think she was ready to be away from me like that- she's only been babysat 3 times total her whole life- so it's all new for us.

Anyways, I decided to enroll her and let her start....It would've been cruel to keep her home and not let her go after seeing how excited she got there. It's 4 days a week for 2 hours, so though it's not very long, it's really hard for me....She's my entire world...It's just hard to believe that my almost-4 year old is starting school already (She wasn't due to start until next fall)....But if the socialization will help her and she will be happy- I'll support that. I just wasn't expecting this to happen so soon....they grow up so fast

How did you handle your kids starting school? Was it hard for you? Was it hard on the kids? Adina has major separation anxiety so I worry about that...but I think she will be okay.

I cried and sometimes stull do when I drop DD off. She just turned 4 and has been going 2 days a week for 2.5 hours a day since the end of August. I just had her first Parent Teacher Conferences and it was so weird lol
It's hard but it will get better

My DD started school last year, a couple of weeks after she turned 3. She goes because she's speech delayed. I was not too keen on the idea at first, but it makes her happy and she's improving, so I'm cool with it now.
I honestly can't wait for her to start kindergarten next year, she loves to learn.

Honestly? It felt like a combination between sad that she was growing up and this:

My son has NEVER been away from me. He turned 4 in August and started school in September. It was so hard on me i cried when i dropped him off and sometimes i still want to cry when i drop him off. Here it is 5 days a week from 8:15-3:30. So its all day and it drives me crazy but it makes it a lot easier because he likes it so much. His teacher is really sweet and we both love her. He has learned so much, i'm glad i decided to do pre-k because i wasnt going to but the teacher has songs for pretty much everything they learn so it makes him actually remember what hes learning instead of us spelling something and him forgetting 10 minutes later.

I know I'm gonna bawl my eyes out like an idiot....Ugh....LOL

I bet the parent teacher conferences are strange....I used to hate those when I was a kid because I knew I'd be in trouble, and I'd always hear "Your daughter just isn't reaching her potential, she's so smart yet she just doesn't want to put any effort in" EVERY YEAR lol....I pray I never have to hear those words about Adina

That's what got me too, knowing that DD loves to learn so much, and seeing how excited and happy she was about being in the school....As long as the kids are happy, that's all that matters, even if you end up blubbering like an idiot over it lol

I didn't cry, I was just really anxious because I don't trust other people with my kids. Her teacher and myself had common ground, so that made me feel a lot better.

Yeah, as far as I've read, Pre-K really does make a difference in most kids throughout school- it's supposed to really help. I know my mom never put me in, and I stayed back in 3rd grade- I was really immature and unfocused, I think Pre-K would've helped me in all honesty lol.

Yeah, Adina had NEVER been Away from me up until 3 months ago- and I started a new relationship, and we've gone on 3 dates alone- because it's important to build a relationship between JUST the two of you as well as with the child obviously (The majority of the things we do are based on Adina's interests). She was with her grandma's though, so she was very happy to spend the time alone with them. But every time I left, I would end up crying half the drive to wherever we were going HAHAHA

Yeah, I don't trust people around my kid either...I was abused as a kid, so now I'm overly paranoid about everything. I'm going with her the first day to make sure everything is the way they say it is. I always have good intuition about people- I've NEVER been wrong, and so far, I haven't felt any negative vibes from anyone I've met, they all seem okay...but still, I can't help but worry- the world is so horrible today   It's terrifying.

I thought my son was going to cry but when i was walking away crying he had the biggest smile on his face. He has a bunch of friends now and has learned how to share. The only thing he doesnt like is nap time. Somedays its nice though because i can actually get the house clean when my daughter is taking a nap because he hasnt taken naps since he was like 2. But most of the time i miss him.
ETA: My aunt put my little cousin in pre-k and she jas done really good in school she is 14 now and in advanced classes and getting A's and B's but she didnt put my other littles cousin in pre-k and he hasnt been doing very well in school.

Well, DD had a new teacher this year and DD hated the teacher. Turns out, the teacher was teaching in mainly Spanish and DD was getting mad because she had no clue what the teacher was saying. No one told us until we moved her classes that she was the only English speaking, white kid in that class. Her teacher was a rude, inconsiderate person and it reflected on my daughter's mood when she got home from school.
Now that DD is in her new class, she's as happy as she can be with school again.
