I walk and bike many places, and people sometimes look at me like, "WTF are you doing?!Walking for transportation? That is to be done on a treadmill in front of a television at the gym!"

Quoting Dr. Paradigm Shift:" That was gonna be my next thought. In a country with so many opportunities, we have what, 24, 25% of ... [snip!] ... smart, you don't have to strive, because look at all the people on the TV gettin' rich, by golly! It's the new American dream."

Very true.

In public schools, I think the dismissing of science is an even larger issue. When I was in junior high, the science teacher couldn't even teach us about Darwinism and Evolution b/c of the outrage of religious parents. Thankfully, once out into a private school, we learned about evolution, even though it was taught as a theory and not an absolute fact.

And don't even get me started on math! I know many people who have graduated high school that were forced to take remedial/elementary mathematics because of how piss poor their high school's education system was.

It seems like most people want to be the next internet sensation than anything else. SMH.

I've never thought that of China. People do?

I can say I have about a 6th grade grasp of math.

We didn't have a sex ed in my high school, they needed to cut funding and that was the first to go.

I can't believe more people here aren't active pedestrians. The weather is almost always perfect. I think part of it is that L.A is so spread out, that an hour commute in the car is really not that extreme---we spend a lot of time in our cars, and get used to the driving I guess. Me, if I can help it, I will avoid being in a car. I hate driving, hate parking. I'm too lazy to find a parking spot

They cut sex ed?

I would have cut art before sex ed.

Yep. They also think that all Asian females as short and can't drive and that they are all extremely submissive. They believe the males all have tiny penises too. My SO is Chinese and I get a lot of magazine comments about it.
There is a high Asian population where I live(some people call Vancouver Hongcouver). So I've heard it all.

Quoting Back to Noob Status:" I don't think that about China, except for the messed up government and no regard for human life bit. But it is true."

You can't say that all Chinese have no regard for human life. That's like saying all Americans are obese, lazy smurfs.

Lazy? Nah. Gluttons? Probably more accurate.

"Fat" and "lazy" are not synonymous or mutually inclusive.

For sure we are gluttons. Modern technology/convenience tends to encourage this. Like, Dr. said, "driving two blocks instead of walking..."

As far as how or why the world sees us a certain way, I'm not sure. I've actually asked the same question, to myself.

I think she said the GOVERNMENT "have no regard for human life"...which is pretty accurate.

I meant that the GOVERNMENT has no regard for human life. Not the Chinese citizens themselves.

Oh totally. And I'm totally guilty of thinking those thoughts before. We were walking though the village Monday to go get baby's birth certificate...and it was just so nice. Window shopping, the air...not having our older kids which is a rarity   I want more days like that
