That is crazy! for 800-1000 you have either a very nice 2 bedroom or a nice 3 bedrooms. Smurf my husband used to have a four bedroom with basement for 700 in a smurffy part of Montreal.... What kind of electricity do you guys have?

Like how much we pay?

Ya its crazy. I moved in with my parents about 5 months ago to save money to buy a house later on. Lol

They wanted the kids here and to help them out well to help eachother I had two kids in a 1 bdrm. Before we moved. I had been there fir years so was paying really cheap but with 3 kids and me it was too small. Lol

Quoting crazy coupon lady:" Here baby bonus pays up to 4 kids, after that its a default amount of 50.00 bucks. lol I have never ... [snip!] ... My parents maid 300.000 a year and got baby bonus, they clearly didnt need it, but its something that most ppl got. kwim?"

I have 5 kids, and I get baby bonus for all 5 of them.

Anyway, to answer your question, I do not agree with the cut backs. So many people who are on assistance(those who legitimately need it) are going to be screwed!

I know people who are on assistance, and they barely get enough to live off of. Each month they have to decide between paying their rent/bills, or buying food, because they can't afford both. The food banks here don't give enough food to last a week, because not enough people donate food to the food bank.

I feel that there should be some sort of start up money, but on a say once every five year basis or so.

As for abused women and what not, there are many resources to help them including shelter's that will provide furniture, Child Tax Credit, and the ability to shoot to the top of the subsidized housing list. (For which rent is geared to income and often like 30 dollars a month)

Start up is a great program, but there were many people who were taking advantage of it. I am very liberal, so it is disappointing that one bad apple has to spoil the bunch

I definitely agree with the last statement you made!! Those bad apples are ruining it for the people who legitimately need help, and who are busting their butts to get back on their feet.

Quoting khigh:" <blockquote><b>Quoting crazy coupon lady:</b>" Its not funded through the same of ... [snip!] ... It comes off of my checks in taxes, its not free money like welfare"</blockquote> Why can't you save money yourself?"

In Canada, all WORKING new moms are entiltled to a year off to care for their baby and are encouraged to breastfeed. Welfare is for people who don't work, they get a check everything month that they will never pay back (well maybe in taxes).

Maternity Leave, is a separate program.. ONLY working people can get it, if you don't have a job that you worked at for so long, you will not get the benefits.

Our paychecks, have taxes taking off, cpp and EI, I pay in 25 percent of all my paychecks while working.. and I will pay for this all my working life depsite only taking two years off with the babies. In otherwords, we pay for our benefits 10 times over. Welfare is never directly paid by the person, they pay into taxes but EI is it's own program.. if we don't pay for it, we don't get it. It doesn't matter what you do, you still get it if you WORKED enough hours.. are you going to try to tell me that nurses, teachers ect.. are on welfare because they had a baby and are using a program they paid for just for this purpose?

It's not the same thing at all, it's in place to encourage mother's to return to the workforce.. if we didn't have this program, many women would probably quit and turn to welfare.. this Materinty program is to AVOID mother's being on welfare.

I'm not sure why you say only $400 lol.. here, it's 55 percent of your income.. I was getting $800 every two weeks plus my employer topped me up to 93 percent for 15 weeks.
