It really depends on your tax bracket. But if you are in a lower tax bracket, you are likely not paying in what you are getting back.

You pay into it your whole life though, and maybe only use it a couple of times.

And I would agree, I think most Canadians like our system and aren't complaining.

Its not the government that puts in money, its actually your employer who puts the rest in, so try again.

Why is you employer paying for you to NOT work? That doesn't make any sense.

Because thats how its set up, under are labor board acts. It is to ensure that the employee is being taken care of when they are on leave, so they will come back to work when their time is up.
Its just the way it works.

We just have different workers rights than the US.

Wanted to add. Ppl who use EI and employers who offer EI premiums have a higher return to work rate then those who dont.
The small % of employes who need time off but are not covered are more likely to not return.

Also EI leave makes it so your employer can not fire you or lay you off and you can not lose your sinority or get paycuts etc....lose postions etc.....when you return to work.

also even if you haven't paid into or do not qualify for EI, your right as a worker will get you parental leave (although unpaid) and your employer must save your job for when you return.
