That s not true, I live in Oklahoma and see ppl taking advantage of the system constantly! The snap and win programs are being abused here largely...

It is. If the government didn't take that money, you could put it in a savings account. They think they know better than you.

Its not funded through the same of anything like welfare tho. Its hard to explain. But the money comes from my own pocket, its basicaly saved for a rainy day for you. buy your employer through a government agency...kwim? Then your employer adds in to it.

It comes off of my checks in taxes, its not free money like welfare

That's the way it should be IMO.

I think that the assistance she is talking about may have only been available where she is .. or only in select provinces, because I have never heard of anything like that where I live, Alberta. I think that taxpayers already help support enough people who struggle, they shouldn't have to buy their furniture and smurf as well. I know that there are lots of places, like the emergency furniture and clothing depots you can go and get most of that stuff for free, because people have donated. They also have places like the habitat for humanity restore that sells stuff cheaply.

Aka social security and Medicare? That's what the government does here, they don't trust us to save our own so they do it. Ppl here could save and pay for their own retirement,

If this cut was made 3 years ago, I wouldin't know how I would pay for first and last for rent and considering that pretty much every place asks for it, I would be stuck. I also wouldin't know how I would be getting to school as what welfare did give me left me with nothing to even buy food with as it all went for rent. I lived off of $460 a month from child tax---Which was ok but not enough if i'd have to chop down $110 for a bus pass to get to school. Diapers, food, milk and bills---I was always short and as a single mom, it wasen't easy. But that's obviously not their problem lol. I feel that they shouldin't cut the start-up and money for a bus pass---It just wouldin't make sense to me.

Sure I can save money myself and do. I have tons of savings. But I cant controle that EI insurance premiums automaticaly come off of my paycheck every pay.
Not every employer her has EI insurance for their employes, but most do.

what are you even talking about?

I meant as far as people in abusive relationships looking for ways to leave. There are so many different scenarios, and yes a shelter would be great... but if you don't have a dime to your name how can you expect people to care for their children let alone themselves? I really don't know the specifics of the Hiatus House here and how long you can stay but I would hope they just made the time longer cause people are going to need it without the start-ups.

Fight to get it removed. That way you could save your money instead of the government. Unless, of course, they give you more than you pay in. Then, it would be assistance.

Shelters, family, friends. There are ways to get out and start over without the gov. You become resourceful when you have to.

Here if you dont have a couch they give you money to buy one, within a certain amount, dishes cribs carseats.

My cousin is having a baby and they just gave her 1100.00 to buy basic baby items diapers bottles for, mula carseat and crib clothes etc......Then when the baby is born she gets another amount on top of it, but since the cut comes into affect she wont get the rest. lol

Yes I agree its alot it really is, but she is a newly single mom of 5 kids. Had worked all her life, a good job till injury and is awaiting disibility so welfare covers till disibility makes a decision.

But yeah thats what they do is hand it out, because you asked for it. fridge stove beds etc.....

No you take a huge pay cut, where as my income was well over 1800 a month, is now under 600, huge pay cut.

See thing is the majority of us like it this way.

How much do you put in out of each paycheck? If it does not equal what you get back, the government is giving you assistance.

Do you put $600 a month into EI?
