I think that's ppl referring to things like not for profits like the USA has lol, the government doesn't buy couches for you in canada lol but there are agencies that might have some to spare, which they have int he USA too

Quoting K&T:" Employment Insurance (EI) provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed Canadians who have ... [snip!] ... a significant risk of death, may also be assisted by Employment Insurance I took that off the government of Canada website. "

So technically, it is assistance?

That's brutal.. I don't know how one even begins to live off that. I don't know what rent and smurf is like there either on average, maybe cost of living is cheaper there.

I know in Alberta the 800/bi weekly is smurf all for anyone who owns or rents a place. I am thankful that I have never needed it.

How long ago? They made sa lot of changes to EI this time last year for Ontario and brought it down a lot. lol

If it started before Jan ist 2012 then yes, but after nope. Job description does not matter anymore when it comes to EI.

I think it's a really bad time to cut the Community Start -ups. With so many people just scraping by it will make getting off of OW harder because people won't be able to afford the start-up costs so why bother looking for work elsewhere? Single mothers, mothers looking to leave abusive partners (or fathers) that have no support system just got kicked in the nuts.

And OP I remember you specifically explaining that you are not on assistance but off on parental leave, like me

That is assistance. We pay out of our paychecks for medicare, but that is still assistance.

No its not. Its not free money like welfare....lol its your own money that was taken off of your paychecks that pays into your own employement insurance. Its not like they just hand you money for free like welfare.

Do you not have shelters there? You know what people do here? Save money and take care of themselves.

It says its assistance right on the government of Canada website. Yes you pay into it, but it's still financial assistance.

Mine is 8.00 and we can get by on 800 monthly.

Your cost of living is much higher then us.
