Probably just get another one of the 18-55 , I'd say. I have both of those. I dont use the 55-200 often though.

I think it would be cheaper just to buy a new 18-55 but I'm not sure. I bought my 55-200 off of ebay for $100 dollars and it's lasted me a long time.   I don't think I'd pay full price for it ($250) especially if you have little ones who are prone to breaking things. Just a suggestion ;)

Mine was refurbished, too!

And don't feel bad... I left a couple of lenses outside, overnight once.
Our dog got into them but luckily they survived!

So, speaking of nikons and people that think they could be a photographer (meaning myself, lol).......... what would be a good lens to work with, aside from the 18-55mm?

Well The $100 50mm is awesome, but it doesn't have autofocus on DX bodies. The 35mm is a great alternative but it's more expensive. That's what I use almost exclusively. 85mm or longer are better focal lengths for portraits.

I've rented some lenses from borrowlenses.com and they are an awesome place to rent from. I rented this from them and I liked it a lot. http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-28-75mm-Aspherical-Built-In-Digital/dp/B001955P8W/?qid=1336490726&ref=sr_1_3&ie=UTF8&sr=8-3
