Start timing at the start of contraction, stop timing when it finishes.

I was told to go in when contractions are 5 mins apart, lasting for at least a minute and you can no longer talk, chat, update FB   , move, smile even when you're NOT contracting.

You time from the strt of one contraction to the start of the next. I was told once they get under 5 minutes apart for at least 2 hours to go in.

You start timing from the start of a contraction and note how long they last. 5-7m between a contraction that is longer than 30seconds means you need to go to the hospital.
If you feel it's time to go then go to the hospital. The timing thing does not really work.
We headed out to the hosp with contractions 10-7m apart that laster for 15seconds. I thought that we were going to get turned back from the pospital because they were spaced apart, short and iregular. But they took us in and our baby boy arrived in 3 hours after that. I guess some women don't have text book contractions. So if you feel it's time GO.
