I don't hate either of them. I just don't see how they are terribly different. If you do something risky - believing it is not risky OR that you can handle the risk, that does not make you free from responsibility. If you take the risk & there are steep consequences, I see it no differently.

In fact I actually feel more sorry for the black mother who laid on her baby - not just because she set herself on fire, but because her story seems clear she had a real problem with alcohol (drinking a 1/5 of vodka at 3 weeks post partum is not normal behavior).- so I think her judgement was severely impaired - on top of being hormonal, sleep deprived, etc.

Yeah, that's messed up.

She must have done it wrong, maybe didn't dilute it properly.

Bleach baths are good for kids with really bad eczema.

I've heard that before - but I don't get it. when my son had eczema it was all about dry skin - it seems like that would make it worse.

BTW - coconut oil cured his...that & oatmeal/epsom salt bath - we alternated.

It does seem odd, but you'd be surprised at how many things are counterintuitively true.

During the most recent study that was done on bleach baths and child eczema, the test group was responding so well that they stopped the study prematurely so that the control group could also start getting relief from the bleach baths. The improvement was that marked.

They worked with moderate to extreme cases in 6 month olds up to 17 year olds, that had the common co-infections that come with eczema, like staph.

What's really great is that bleach baths are a wonderful first line of defense before turning to antibiotics, for kids getting repeat staph infections run the risk of developing antibiotic resistance in the beneficial bacteria in their digestive systems, which.can be picked up by pathogenic bacteria via horizontal gene transfer (yay evolution!).

Glad to help

I did this with my daughter too. Hers was never so bad that it got infected but it still helped with the rough spots on her body.

Also had my husband do it because he still gets eczema on his legs. It helped and then he got lazy and stopped taking the baths   When it bothers him bad enough he'll take a few

When I've told people about this before on BG, usually in the Parents with Infants forum on threads about eczema, people usually go   because they see "bleach".

But it's really no different than taking your baby to the local public pool, which easily has as much % bleach in it or more. Plus other chemicals ... and pee

We just skip the chemicals & go straight with the pee in our pool.

Quoting kthx.:" Oh shut the smurf up. Just because she has no kids, doesn't mean she has a heart of stone. Don't pull that smurf."

Thank you! I wish people would stop pulling that smurf.

As to the OP, yeah it was an accident, but lots of children have died over their parents' stupidity. Like, accidentally leaving their kids in the car. And they have been charged for it. Why shouldn't the woman in this case not be? If anything, this was FAR worse.

Exactly. I don't think the woman should rot in prison for it. It was an accident... but she should have some sort of consequence for it.

The majority of the articles state no charges were filed.   Sometimes they are and it usually says that.
