Recurrent Abscesses

posted 29th Nov
My daughter is almost 2 1/2. She has been having abscesses on(in?) her skin off and on since she was 18 months old. She's tried 3 different antibiotics, and each time, it clears up the current abscess, but they always come back. Last time, the doctor was not her regular pediatrician, but an ER doctor (long story), and he said that she probably had a staph infection of the skin causing them, and as usual we got a prescription for an antibiotic. I thought that maybe, just maybe, we were done with these things. Well, now she has another one, and it's already bigger than a nickel- they are usually about the size of dime or penny (I'm talking about the entire thing, under the skin). I'm calling the pediatrician tomorrow, but I feel so frustrated for her. She's got a lot of stress in her life and this is just one more thing.   I don't know what to do.
Any input or advice is MORE than welcome.

Are they sure it's not MRSA?

I don't know. They haven't tested her for anything. They just keep pushing different antibiotics.
I've been thinking about that, too, and I think I'm going to demand they do some sort of testing.

I would push for a skin swab or testing the pus if they drain the abcess. It really does sound like MRSA to me.

I hope it isn't, but the more I think about it, it's the most logical answer. I even asked the ER doctor last time, if it could be something that never fully cleared up and just kept coming back, and he just said, "It's possible, try this antibiotic."

If she tests positive, doesn't she have to be automatically hospitalized for a certain amount of time?

It looks like they would just give you a different antibiotic that is targeted to the infection.

Here's a good article on it if that's what she has:

Thank you, reading it now.

I went to a plastic surgeon/dermatological surgeon to get a scar from an abscess fixed. He said that some people carry more of that particular bacteria on their skin than normal and that special precautions will help keep abscesses and boils from forming but won't cure the problem.

Maybe you could take your daughter to one.I had no idea about the bacteria, but it's been several years since I've had a flair-up.Love it.
