religion or not?

posted 29th Nov
Whether you're super religious, athiest or somewhere in between...How did/do/will you handle religion with your kids?..advice please!
My husband grew up Mormon but doesn't practice anymore, although he'd LIKE to go to a church, but a non-denominational one.. I grew up without any religious beliefs and I'm not sure what I DO believe, I just know I don't believe in the Bible and organized religion and hell... I do believe there is SOME kind of god, just no idea who/what it is... My kids sometimes go to church with my MIL but we don't really talk about what they learned or anything. I've had a lot of people tell me that I should at least introduce them to religion so they will learn respect, honesty and humility and just what being a good person in general is all about... Thoughts?
I have an 18 y.o. daughter with DS, so she doesn't really ask those kinds of questions, although she loves going to church with my MIL. I also have an 11 yo daughter and a 4 yo son...

I'll introduce them to all kinds of religion... take them to whatever kind of church they would like. I'm Atheist... but will totally respect their wishes to be Christian, Baptist, Mormon, etc.

I'll let her believe what she likes. I find people to be more happy if they aren't forced to believe what their parents believe.

We take our kids to church and explain to them this is what mom and dad believe. Then we talk to them about what others believe, and hope that they will make the decision that best fits their life the older they get.

My SO is an atheist, I'm a Secular Humanist, my parents are Catholic, and in-laws are Christian. We plan on telling our son what we believe in and what his grandparents believe in and then let him decide from there.

I educate my daughter on all religions. Not overly but when it comes up. She goes to church for the sense of community, it's a very "not preachy" kinda church and she basically just hangs out with the other kids and plays, doesn't learn about god or anything just life lessons like be kind to others and such.

I was raised to find my own way. I do not believe in god and was not raised to believe in one. I will raise my son the same way. My parents approached the topic as, "Some people believe ______. And that's okay." I will approach it the same way.

Children don't need religion to learn values, respect, honesty, and to be a good person. The golden rule is important. I teach him that you often get back what you give in this world. Treat people with respect and expect it back. If you cannot respect people, don't expect to receive any. Treat people as you would like to be treated. Take into account others' feelings. Honesty is important. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I encourage him to think for himself, question everything, and find his own truths.

we tell them that some folks believe fairy tales and think they are very real. We tell them that some people think a man in the sky controls everything you do.
Our emphasis in the house is science.

Being a die hard Wiccan in my teens and 20's and I never imagined myself becoming so agnostic, but I am....

My emphasis is science, too, only I will be very careful not to call them fairy tales, simply because I want him to be respectful, you know what I mean? A "some people believe this, and some people believe this, and no one really knows."

But I teach science.

We're atheist and don't bother teaching the kids about religions. They've asked a few basic questions but generally aren't interested/don't care/about that kind of stuff.

If they want to get religion later, there's not much I can do about it-but I will absolutely not be taking them to churches etc to sate their curiosity. Nope. They can do all that on their own time when they move out.

I don't think it's disrespectful. they get their information out of a book of stories.

I think it's equally as ignorant to teach your child not to believe something as it is to teach them to only believe one thing. I'm interested in raising an independent individual with independent thoughts. It's my job to give them all the information and their job to form their own conclusions.
