Stupid fasfa.

I couldn't answer 1 single question on their financial aid application indicating me an independent student (even though I haven't lived at home since 18, have a child etc etc) so I had to get my parents info. My mom flipped smurf saying no way, none of their business, not my problem, we aren't paying for your college...totally overreacting. I spent 2 days showing her my application and help topics on the subject of providing parents info and finally got her to budge on it. I'm just venting...because...I can't believe she basically told me kiss my ass I'm not giving out my private info to some website (fasfa, not like its Facebook) so you can go to college. Not my problem, you just won't go. I'm not gonna be financially responsible for another kid (my sisters live with them). Like what the smurf, dude? You borrow money from us for smurfs sake. Don't even start about being financially responsible for me. A. I have never asked for a thing and moved out as soon as humanly possible. B. it's college. To better myself. My fuse is starting to get real short with her!

If your parents are still claiming you as a dependent that is just how it is. If not, you don't need their information.

My parents claim me and I'm still filed under independent.

My Mother acts like she doesn't want me to better myself either.
She basically told me she wants me to get another full time job.(last one was horrible! and she wanted me to stay with it despite the supervisor lying on everything i did!)
And pay the bills that i should since i live here, i'm responsible for them.
She doesn't work and neither does her friend who lives here.
I just want to finish getting my high school dipoloma and go on to college and all she can talk about is how i'll never make it so i might as well just get a full time job with no diploma.

I have a kid but it says something along the lines of do you (when you refers to you and your spouse it will specially say you or your spouse but it said just the prefix "you") provide half or more support to your child? I can't say yes as SO already has. I'm not even working so I can't financially say that anyway. Should I say yes? We live together with LO so does that count? And no not married. This smurf is so frustrating.

also, if you're parents are divorced, you only need to fill out one of their incomes.

Yes you can choose yes. My SO and I have always both picked it. Our financial aid advisor told us to.

Oh I see. I don't know, sorry.
Sounds like a headache.

Pretty onve you have a child your independent and your child is your dependent so your parents shouldn't claim you or the IRS is gonna question smurf. At least that's what I was told by my friend from her tax preparer. (her mom tried to claim her after she had her baby...who was 6 mo old) So I'm prettt sure if you file as independent it should work out fine.

No smurf? We were sure it worked like claiming taxes. We were afraid if we both chose yes that it would cause problems and they would say two people can't provide more than half of a childs support at the same time. Thank you. I'm just gonna go for. I wish she still had come around easier though. I was pretty much cussed out on contact for asking.
