My mom Still claims me and our tax person has never said a word.

Yeah I screwed my parents up one year. I filed and said I was Not anyone's dependent. My parents claimed me as one (I didn't realize they would. I should have guessed since I lived in their house January to June that year). They got audited and their intitial refund amount got shrank. That was a fun year. As far as on fasfa, I was unawares two people could claim the same child as their dependent.

i had the same issue. my parents arnt paying for my college but i was considered a dependant unless i had a child or was married. I went in and told the guy i moved out along time ago and dont have contact with my family.( i do have contact with them but was desprite) he gave me a form and said i my parentscould sign off stating they dont claim me then i can be considered a independant. it wa like pulling teeth though

Not true. If her parents provide 50%+ of her living expenses she is a dependent

True. However that doesn't apply in this case luckily. I thought both me and SO couldn't claim our child on fasfa at the same time. Therefore fasfa had me get my parents info. Part of me thought their system made no sense if you had a child you were taking care of.

Nope I've been going to school 5 years with a kid and having my parents claim me and I have had no problems.

On the question where it says can someone claim you Say yes or no whatever applies. Then for the question if you provide over half for your child
Pick yes. Mine has always went through. That's the key question. It doesn't matter who claims you or if you even claim your child on your taxes. My fiancé claims our dd on taxes and I get claimed by my parents. Good luck. It's not hard to do you just have to have the right answer.

Idk how it works but it does. I saw a financial aid person at school and that's how they told me to do it.

My parents aren't providing 50% of my living expenses. According to fafsa if you aren't married, a bunch of scenarios about being a homeless youth, a veteran, active duty soldier or providing half or more of your child's support during the year than you are still a dependent student, leaving your parents potentially financially responsible.
My misunderstanding was that my SO is the one working so technically he is literally providing more than half of my child's support throughout the year but since we live together, everything is in our name and raise our child together that opens me up to saying that I as in we provide half of my child's support throughout the year; not my parents. My parents are non factor.

It went through fine. Everything is in order now. I have to do tap now (is that what it's called?) I have to have SO show me before he leave for work what I need to do.

This same thing happened to me when I started college at 17. My mom refused to fill out the fafsa, didn't want to "pay" for my college (WTF, it's an application for student grants?!) wouldn't listen to anyone who tried to tell her it was an application for government assistance and was required to attend college. In KY, not sure if it's the same all over the country, but here you are a dependent of your parent until 23 unless married or have a child, so what did I do? I went out and married a friend from high school just so I could go to college without her damn information. Didn't actually file for divorce until just a couple years ago. That was a fun $700   Thanks, mom. She actually said to me, "I don't know why you wanna go to college anyway, you're a manager at your McDonald's now, you should just stay there" WTF?! Who tells their kid they should work at McDonald's for the rest of their life instead of furthering their education? Meh. Whatever. I changed my major a few times and now I'm graduating in a couple months, so smurf her. /rant
