I think it's ridiculous that you're both arguing about money neither one of you have and probably never will win.

If I won I'd take care of everyone, even my FIL who I can't stand just because that would be fair. Wtf would I need all of that money for? If I ended up winning, if I ever play, I'd keep my winnings hidden if at all possible, then disburse over time. It's sickening what money does to people, even small amounts.

i like the idea of finding what people need and getting what they need for them instead of just giving them the money. i might do that for family. Putting a large chunk in an account is for future generations. to ensure they didn't have to struggle like past generations.

well, DH is missing his big toe. we've been told by doctors that its going to cause A LOT of problems in the future. probably future surgeries and he'll get to the point that he can't work. i would want to make sure that we as a family could manage when that happens.

Of course the money would be shared with family and friends (except those with drug or gambling problems).
Based on what you wrote, perhaps you dont realize how much f-ing money the jackpot was.
Now, I'm not saying that i or anyone should divide it up between family, but the money would be shared to help those we cared about.
Now, if you didnt do something productive with a LOT of it, people would call you a rotten, dirty rich smurf.

see that's what a lot seem to be missing about what i said. my point was mainly sharing with family. family that are capable of working and getting what they need instead of helping strangers that are worse off and providing for your own family

300-something plus bucks is way more than enough money to help your family not have to work so hard AND a ton of strangers.

If that's you're argument YOU'RE more than capable of working for your own stuff and should donate everything to charity.

I havent read each post but i dont think any are saying you should give siblings enough to quit work and live on. I certainly wouldnt do that.
Maybe your reaction at dinner was interpretted as "you get nothing as I'd rather reward strangers than my own family with a dime."

thats what i'm saying though. i'd give most of it to less fortunate. only thing i'd buy for us is 2 reliable cars and a decent house. so that we can quit being a burden on MIL. i'd pay off ALL her debts because most of it is from us anyway and i'd buy her any car or house she wanted because she's done so much for us.

no BIL thought i was saying i was keeping it all to myself. when i explained about donating he acted like he was more entitled because he's "family"

While i wouldnt use the word "entitled," i would not think well of you if you were my sister and you didnt help me a little (assuming i wasnt already rich). I think to only help yourself, your MIL and strangers is odd and off-putting for your family.
and, since you consider yourself a burden right now, i assume you are low-income. Once you had the money, i think you'd do a LOT more for yourself than the meager spending you mentioned.

I didn't read all of the replies but to be completely honest I can't see me having an argument with DH or any of my in laws about how a hypothetical 550M would be dished out anyway

Since they'd be willing to share with you, yes. Yes you are very selfish. hypothetical 500M would be more than enough to keep you, your kids, and your family comfortable, with some to help your SO's family out and donate.

Very true. I concur that she'd spend more on herself than the little she said. I'm sure some splurging would be going on, it's human nature.
