tv time

Just curious about your and the kids tv time.

Do you allow the kids to watch tv before or after school (if school aged)
Do you let your toddlers watch tv all day or is it limited?

And do or how do you feel about letting babies watch tv, (under a year old) ?

For us, my kids get unlimited tv time. They are 4 and 10 yrs old. So both in school. The only rules I enforce about tv time, is when I say its homework time or chore time etc.....the tv goes off and the music goes on instead. So when they do what was asked of them they can return to watching tv.

I avoid the dreaded but but but my show is still on, by telling them as soon as their current show is over its time to do homework chores etc....

They watch before school while they get ready in the morning. If they have a slow morning it goes off till they get ready...kwim?

Also how do you feel about tv's in the kids room yes or no. If so is it controlled by them or you?

I also have a 10 month old dd. and she loves tv in the mornings lol like right now she is glued to tickity tock or whatever its called. I keep the tv on almost 24/7 lol (although I arely watch) lol she plays on the floor while cartoons are on. I do the breakfast dishes and wash the floors etc....after the kids leave for school.

So I am curious on everyone elses household tv time?

Oh my kids are active in sports, so although its unlimited time for them, we are gone a lot weekends in the day time and some week nights after school. But when home its pretty much watch whatever and however long. lol

I'm pretty much just like you.

DD is 3 and it honestly depends on the day. She likes tv, but she wont sit in front of it all day. She'll go off and play, we'll turn it off to do crafts, bake, etc. So all in all, she isn't watching that much of it.

My son is almost 20 mos and the tv is almost always on. Mostly it acts more as just background noise cause he's not always watching it. We play and color and do other things, but I just never think to turn the tv off. I guess it's just a habit cause I grew up with the TV always on.

I don't turn it on in the morning, only because there's no time to watch a show AND get ready, but when DS gets home from school he's welcome to watch TV and I don't limit how long. Like you though, when it's time to do something, dinner for example, the TV goes off.

I've seen parents put daily restrictions on TV and it gives the TV such a power. The kids would throw intense tantrums when it was time to turn the TV off because the short time they were allotted was so coveted. I found that by not putting such restrictions, my son could care less when he's "allowed" and "not allowed" to watch TV. It has no power. And really, anyone who has a TV on in the background knows that half the time no one is watching it.

I keep it off as much as i can. I kick my older two outside and my one year old does not watch. They do enjoy saturday morning t.v.

I am pretty much just like you. My girls are now 11 and 13 but it's pretty much always been the same with them. We started putting some channels on block (MTV for one) as they got older because I didn't want them watching Jersey shore or whatever but they each have a tv in their bedrooms and we have never had any problem with it. They do there chores and home work and we still get family time, plus they are involved in sports so it's not like when they aren't in school they just sit cooped up in their rooms watching tv.

I have the TV on all the time. It's just me and LO all day and night ((he is 14months)) so I always have some sort of show on. If its not one of "his" shows, he won't watch, but as long as baby first tv or mickey is on, he is hooked. I only put it on those shows when I am trying to do something..like eat...so he is distracted for a longer period of time.

I won't put a tv in his room until he gets up to middle school and depending on how good in school he is.

LO has been watching TV since he was 4/5 months old.

I agree too much control usually causes a lot of fuss for kids, but not always.
Yeah when the baby sleeps and its just me here, it stays on. i have a few shows I watch but at night only, when all are in bed. Other then that its backround noise. lol

Its funny cause this morning my mom was here so I had it on one of those morning shows a lo was all upset. I picked up the remote and right away she looked at the tv so I put mickey mouse clubhouse on and she turned and smiled at me. lol Then zoned right into it.

It was different then her normal morning routine and she knew it too. She didnt want us watching her tv time. lol

During the day, the tv is always on, basically because I hate it really quiet. LO doesn't pay attention to it, even though it's always on Disney Junior. I figure if we have sound, it better Mickey, than say, CSI or something. She will run out and dance to the Hot Dog song though, lol. The older kids get to use the computer to do their homework, then they have an hour each free computer time and about 2 hours each to watch what they want on tv, so it's 4 hours.

My LO just turned 4. She goes thru phases of being interested and being not interested. When NOT interested in it I get bummed out as she is not good with independent play and I need a break.
When she is in a TV phase, we usually only allow an hour in the morning and in the evening.

My kids love CSI and NCIS. Criminal minds and flash point. lol Hahaha we watch them together a lot. lol

I meant for the background noise stuff, for the baby. I'd rather have something that sings the ABC song or whatever, than the sound of someone being murdered
