At a year old and for only 5 minutes, I'd let him be.

He's probably mad that he's being put to bed, because all kids hate it pretty much, they feel like they are going to miss something. Then he gives up and realizes he's tired and gives in

I don't really support CIO, but if you do then that's ok too! It seems to be bothering you a little bit however. It doesn't make you weak, it makes you empathetic. If you try to understand what your child might be feeling, then you may decide against this. An alternative to CIO would be a bedtime routine like reading a book or singing a song. Even a recording. The more routine the better. He will learn to know what's coming and be ok with it.

If its only five minutes you are doing well. Sometimes kids cry to relive stress at the end of the day. He will eventually grow out of crying. It shouldn't take too long and he will just go to sleep without any fuss. I think it is better for them to realise they can put themselves to sleep. Imagine waking up in the night alone and having to cry for mum to come and put you to sleep. I think that is hard on the babies. This way, if he wakes up he knows he can go back to sleep without distress.

now that i think about it...its probably more of a battle cry.because other than that he sleeps for 13 hours straight.

Aww cute. Have you tried staying there for 5 minutes to rub his back etc.? He could just feel like he's missing out on something or he could hate being alone.

get him into a routine. bbbs --- bath brush book and sleep. Do this every night and get him into a routine. Don't move his bed time.. always put him to bed at the same time. Have you tried snuggling on the floor with him? I always use soothing bath soap and then read to mine... i put her in the crib wiht her sophie giraffe and in 5 min shes asleep.

routine is everything. if you are disorganized, they will be unhappy.

My son has always put himself to sleep this way since the day he was born. Took me a month of trying to rock him to sleep before I figured out he didn't want to be. He always cried right when I laid him down and by the time I would get down the hallway he would stop and go to sleep. He's 19 months now and has mostly stopped crying at bed time and come to enjoy it. He has his two favorite things, his fluffy pillow and his fuzzy blanket and we put him in bed and he stands there and gives us each a kiss (if we're both home) then he lays his head on the pillow and we cover him up with his blanket and he pulls it up to his chin and smiles   Then when we start to leave he throws everything to the side and gets on his belly and sticks his butt in the air and his thumb in his mouth hahaha.

Point is, if it's only a couple of minutes I really wouldn't worry about it.

I'd be happy with a baby who only cried for five minutes and slept that long. I really don't believe the crying hurts them at all but hopefully for your sake it doesn't last.
