Fifths disease

posted 28th Nov
So apparently I was exposed last week to fifths disease. From what I always heard it could be dangerous to expecting moms. I called the dr and they didn't seem concerned. Just go on if I get a fever or rash. Then I looked online and it said don't wait to call your dr for symptoms and to get a blood test done for an immunity check and to see if you have the virus. Ok. So wth? Has anyone dealt with this and what did your dr do?

Of fifths disease? It's a viral rash.

This late in pregnancy should be ok for you. Or it shouldn't be life threatening to the baby. Baby's that get Parvo or Fifths disease it can be dangerous, but it's only in the first trimester. Most babies are miscarried(if I'm remembering right)

They thought my son had parvo. They'll have fluid in their bellies and abnormal blood flow in their brains. My son had the fluid in his belly and normal blood flow in his brain. And I think most don't make it far into pregnancy. You're over half way there, I think you'll be ok and it's probably why the doc isn't worried. Especially since you're already being monitored closely aren't you?

I have parvo antibodies. So the good thing is if you do get it, you'll have the antibodies.

Yeah I go to the high risk spec Friday so I'll bring it up in case they wanna check for anything during the u/s. Yeah it said most babies who get it early in preg don't make it past 20 weeks. But I guess it's probably diff when the baby is developed by now just growin bigger and stronger. They're like little people by now. If I get it I guess well deal with it at that point. But still like I need one more dang thing to worry about ?

I actually had this years ago before i had any kids and i know it's highly contagious so i would definitely bring it up to another doctor for a second opinion just to be safe.

Yeah that's what I would do too. And just watch for any signs and symptoms.

They'll let you know at the high risk appt, but you're probably fine by now if you get it.

And I understand what you mean about just another thing.

I've been wanting to get fabric for you to make some little people diapers and with thanksgiving I've had no luck. The lines are way to long!

I did when I was pregnant with Brighton. RJ caught parvo and we kept him isolated at my mom's just in case until I could get my immunity panel back (it took 5 days). I was fortunately immune. But it is serious at any point in pregnancy from what I was told because if mom catches it, it is near certainty baby will. It isn't dangerous normally, but it stops production of red blood cells for a time until the virus passes. This is very serious for a fetus and can necessitate need for a blood transfusion (done through the cord) before birth. If not monitored carefully, baby can die. And it's not just first trimester that there is a risk. I was late second trimester and it was a huge concern until I proved immune.

I did not know this. They never told me when they thought my baby had it.

I was pretty freaked out about it. They ran my immunity panel and while waiting on the results did an extra ultrasound to check for any signs of the condition (large belly with rapid change in size is one of the first signs) and if anything were to have shown up they wanted to test baby's blood (I didn't ask how). If no signs they were going to do a detailed ultrasound every week to check for signs of it developing. Since I turned out immune I didn't have to go through the monitoring or worrying about catching it and baby getting it (they said baby only can catch it if mom gets it). I never knew it could be such a serious problem since it's basically just a blotchy viral rash!

Omg   well I'm definitely gonna bring it up tomorrow. Dang. I always feel like my drs office blows stuff off. And I hate that I can only talk to nurses when I call. I love my dr and he does every thing for me, but the nurses are sometimes wushu washy. Idk.

Yeah, they should run the immunity panel on you at the very least. I had called as well as emailed my doctor to let them know about my exposure. The nurse called back the same day and said they had a protocol to follow for that and step one was blood work and the ultrasound. Sometimes I don't think doctors know what to do and don't get concerned about things that are relatively uncommon.
