newborn with a eye infection

posted 28th Nov
Anybody's LO get a eye infection at such a young age? She's 2 weeks old and her eyes are so puffy, swollen looking under neath. I'm wondering if this puffyness will go away once the infection is gone. The Dr gave me drops, her poor eyes look so bad and get super gooey.

If you are nursing you can use breastmilk to treat it. It works like a charm. Just squirt some in her eyes every time you nurse. It has natural antibacterial & antifungal properties. Works great in older kids & adults too. Everyone I have given some too (milk that is) says it is better in 24 hrs). ;)

My daughter's eyes were like that for the first 6 months of her life. They said it was a blocked tear duct and it would go away on its own, if not they could do a quick surgery to clear it out. It is basically the tear duct trying to open.

If she has been on the meds for a few days and it is still gooey I would bet your problem is something similar. LO still gets really crusty eyes whenever she gets a bad cold, and with season changes for about a week.

Yeah they said its blocked tear duct, the drops say there for a eye infection. I just hope her eyes don't stay like this, there so puffy and get so gooey and crusty she can't open them. I have to wipe with a warm rag.

Yep. I had to wipe LO's eyes quite a bit, like every couple hours. They are probably just trying to rule out infection, follow the course, if they get better it is infection, if not it is just a clogged tear duct.

What happens if it is a clogged tear duct? What do we do to fix it then?

Like I said above, it will usually go away on its own after a few months, if not they can do surgery to clean out the tear duct.

LO was on two courses of antibiotic after leaving the hospital, neither helped.

I had eye problems as a baby to, so maybe she is inheriting it from me   Ah what kind of surgery? Is it minor?
