I only put the normalizing obesity bit in there because in the FB discussion I got this from, that was the main theme.

What's the argument presented in regards to the normalization of obesity. I'm just curious.

wait...I read your question wrong, lol....

The main argument that has any validity (imo) is children seeing the mannequins and thinking that it's normal to be obese. There were some other comments, but being on FB, they were mostly asinine, lol.

I don't believe that it is "normalizing obesity".

The fact is, people are overweight and it's really hard to sell clothes to a person if they are only seeing it on a size 2 mannequin.

I mean, there is a difference in being obese and being overweight. Not every overweight person is obese, and actually the medical guidelines for obesity are kind of ridiculous. I'm going into a career field where I help people get healthy/lose weight what have you, and I can tell you some people will always be overweight no matter what they do. So there's nothing wrong with normalizing being your natural weight. Just as there's nothing wrong with seeing stick thin mannequins, either because there are plenty of people who are naturally that thin. I hate that there is an expectation to take a side. I'm a size 5 and I'm considered to be thin, but I recognize that thin isn't always healthy. (And I'm not saying you are expressing disgust at this or anything, but just in general terms.)

By that reasoning, seeing obese people on the street would also send the same kind of message.

It's not really someones weight that I see an issue with, it's their unhealthy habits. And most of the time that is associated with being obese. I mean, I try not to judge because it is their life, but there are so many health problems (like diabetes for example) that are becoming more and more prevalent. It is not a good thing for our society, wether you feel it's a personal choice or not (obviously it's a personal choice, I just didn't know a better way to word it...). That's why I don't dissagree with restricting drink size and other things like that.

I was thinking the same thing. There's nothing better for "normalizing" something than to see the real thing all over the place.

I'm not saying that being obese doesn't cause health problems because it most certainly does, but thin people with those same habits are at just as much risk as obese people.

wow, lol, that's interesting! Although, I'm not just talking about causing deaths. I'm talking about all the medical treatments that are now having to be done more because of things like these. Also, it's just gotta suck to be over weight with knee and back problems, etc. I know thin people have all those problems too, but the added 100 lbs has really gotta suck. Plus, being an xray tech, it's so much harder doing exams on obese patients. Especially when we have to lift them. Not to mention the extra radiation they're recieving because of all the adipose tissue. Anyway, we're not really arguing, lol. All your points are valid!
