Next step in learning to read??

My daughter is 4 she knows all her letter by sight and can write them and she also knows the different sounds of each letter. Ive talked to her preschool teacher about going further and teaching her to actually read. They said they dont go any further than teaching the sounds as most kids in the class still arent even close to having that down, so they just drill those for the rest of the school year and let them learn to put them together and read in kindergarten. Soooo my question is how do i move her on to the next step of putting them togethe and actually reading??

I started with my now 4 year old around 3 years old with reading.

I labled everything in the house with words lol so everything she saw around the house had the word to go with it.

All her drawers were labled socks undies pants etc.......

We did break down reading work books (started those at 2) but the reading ones she was big on at 3 years old. lol

That's how my parents taught me. They had index cards with paperclips. They used articles too (the refrigerator, a sock, a pair of pants) Eventually they made cards that had other word cards and we'd make sentences and since I knew the words, I could read it.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and has known the letters, and the sounds they make, for a little while.

Now she wants to point to each word as I read them when we read books (it takes forever to read this way!). Doing this she already remembers some small words and can "read" them when I point them out in books.

She seems to have a real interest in reading and asks me what words say, and how to spell words, constantly.

I help her "sound out" small words. Since she knows the sounds the letters make, she is able to do it, although has trouble with vowels (they are tricky!)

I haven't done the labeling "sight words" stuff yet, but I think it's also a good idea. For now, since she loves books so much, that is what we do. Read together, sound out small words, etc.

Have fun! I think that if a young child shows interest they can be taught to read at any age!

Call the school she will be attending for K. Ask them what program / testing they are using for their kindergartners.

We are using the step test. He isn't progressing the way they want, the testing is weird & way to quick. It doesn't give him time to think about anything. He either knows it or he fails.

Ya it works. My 4 yr old is in kindergarten her first year and is the only kid in her class who can read and knows all the letters and sounds.

But she has been reading at a grade 1-2 level forever now, since we took the time at home a did that stuff with her. lol My 10 year old is behind in education (MID) and reads at the same level as her 4 year old sister.

I found a pretty neat website for now. Learntoreadfree.com i went Ahead and turned the volume off and souded out each word with her. By the end of the first lesson she didnt need my help and sounded each word out on her own and got eery question right!
