different doctors and different hospitals do things differently... and best depends on your body, how ready you are etc..

if your cervix isn't ready to dilate.. they can do cervadil or cytotec to ripen the cervix. Then they typically start pitocin, or if you kick into labor (happens sometimes) the doc may just come in and break your water (if baby is engaged and you're dilated already).. this can release natural oxytocin to induce you as well.

or.. if your cervix is ready .... they may just start pitocin to help things move along... and/or break your water.

I was induced with picoten or however you spell it. They start out with a small amount and depending on how fast you dilate they increase the drip and then break your water.

there's a few options, There's cervadil, Pitocin, the cervix and balloon method, breaking your water ect. I would say them breaking my water is what sped up my labor the most.

I wasn't induced, my water broke on its on at 6pm and got pitocin around 11pm, this is my first kid so idk if the pain was worse than not being induced, but pitocin did make my labor go fast.

1) stripping membranes - increases hormone production that can trigger labor. feels like a vigourous vaginal exam, but you must be slightly dilated to do it
2) AROM - artificial rupture of membranes or breaking your water. feels like a really rough vaginal exam, but again you have to be dilated for it to be possible
3) mechanical dilation - Inserting a catheter balloon into the cervix and forcing dilation can trigger labor and is like stripping membranes on steroids - very old school and not used as much now.
4) cervical rippening - cytotec, cervidil or a prostin gel is inserted vaginally (or sometimes taken orally with some meds) and that stimulates that "early labor" style contractions that cause thining of the cervix and slight dilation, but can put you into full blown labor. This is used when you are not dilated at all/ much and often pitocin is used after it
5) pitocin - artificial oxytocin. your body produces oxytocin naturally and that hormone causes contractions/labor. and this is asynthetic form of that and is given via IV and titrated until your contractions are appropriatly frequent and strong. works best with a rippened cervix (achieved either naturally or with a cervical rippening agent)

So even if your water breaks on its own they still use pitocin on you?

yep they might - that's called an augmentation of labor. Just because your water breaks doesn't mean you will contract enough to change your cervix

So usually will they break your water first then use pitocin or the other way around?
