Thank you. In our situation, it was more used when he got to the point where he started harming the other children or the adults. As soon as he'd crawl into the cubby, he'd start laughing, and spend the entire time in it laughing, until he was ready to come out. Honestly, he would've loved being in something like that. What bothers me most is, what if something was to happen and the child in there couldn't get out.

Yes I have, I've worked in a home with special needs individuals. We didn't have a box to throw them in and I wouldn't want one. We found what works to calm them down, be redirecting, crafts, cooking, music, or painting, every one was different. Have I had residents that flipped out and tried to self harm? Yes. Its scary and it sucks but it didn't go on forever. Where I worked a room like that would be considered a restraint and the company wouldn't allow it.

And thats is exactly its to protect themselves and to protect those around them. Its a safety messure that needs to be taken. Although the ones her are actual rooms with a window in the door high up for an adult to see in and the walls are padded with carpet.
This one is a little small imo.

I could see one like that being used...but that one seems so...inhumane.

This is crazy how fast this story spread!!

This is in my town and I have many friends that have kids going to this school. Most parents did not know about it and are pretty miffed to say the least.

HOW do they get away with that?

And how long do the kids have to stay in there? It's been shown that isolation can be an insidious form of torture and is actually used that way.

For autistic kids that are experienced sensory overload ...

Each one is different and even with each child, they don't always experience the same kind of sensory overload, audio vs visual etc and there are a number of ways to approach each situation. There are headphones, or weighted blankets and all kinds of smurf you can do

Putting them in a dark box just seems lazy. It's not the same as using a sensory deprivation tank.

Its not the same for all, but my son for one, would LOVE this. He often closes himself in the closet or a box when he needs a break from everything, this would work great for him.

Putting a kid in for bad behaviour is not ok, but if it was something they liked that calmed them, then why not.

Yes I agree that is different, when he is doing it himself and obviously wants to.

Temple Grandin built something like this for herself. She also built herself a squeeze shoot and then went to work with cattle. She would love this!

I personally don't know what I feel about it. I think it could go either way, depending on what condition the child has. I really would like to see Thunder Shirts for children (and have even thought about making them...just don't know any autistic children to try it with).

Her squeeze machine was to provide input from the compression though, the box would have just made her feel closed in and anxious (I know where you were going with the idea, just wanted to clear that up   )

They do make a thing like thunder shirts for kids, they are called compression vests and work in a similar manner that Temple's shoot did, but giving that squeeze.

I think the box works for a small group - while my son would LOVE it, the chances that that school has more than a small handful of kids who would like to utilize it is unlikely (unless it's a special needs school).
