It doesn't really bother me because I've really never been one to use my phone during class...It can be used between classes. My professors even took phones away when I was in college. BUT when there is a family emergency, there shouldn't be any punishment..

are we talking hs? if so, i say no cell phones....if there is an emergency, okay, thats an execption, but 9 times out of 10 i bet its to text their bff.. when i was in school, cell phones werent really something kids had, but all electronics were forbidden, and taken away, for the rest of the year. this was pretty much our tape player walkmens, but still. and we got over it, bc school was for school.

I think that cell phones are a complete distraction in class and they should not be allowed in the class at all. If a student is playing with it, it should be taken away.

If there is a "family emergency", the parent can call the office and have a message relayed.

i think it should be taken away until the end of the day. if it is true family emergency they can call the school and have them go to the office..
a cell phone is distracting.. it might not be to the student but it could be to the person next to them.

LMFAO!!!

When I was in high school we didn't have the typical "cell phone" that todays kids have. I fully think the teachers have the right to say "NO PHONES IN CLASS". If your parents have a family emergency, they know where you are and can call the school like they have done all the years in the past.

Cell phones, iPods ect... Have no place in the classroom. Those are toys and not necessities to the class.

if there is a family emergency the parent can call the school. however, i think its annoying to take the cell phones away, but the kids are fully aware of the rules so if they do they shouldn't complain about it.

I do see it as appropriate, no teenager just has their phone sitting on their desk for no reason. Having had my phone taken multiple times through high school, and now being an adult it is completely disrespectful to have it out any time during a class and a classroom is no place for phones, imo. If they're at lunch or study hall, it's whatever, but during an actual class put it away and keep it there.

My friend was telling me how her daughters teacher tried to take her cellphone because she had it out charging and refused to give it to him when he asked. Didn't give her a warning or anything and other students had their phones out charging as well. At the moment her daughter is going through a lot with her father in the hospital and he could possibly die. She also lives nowhere near her school so she was charging it up to be able to make it home with a full battery in case of anything.
He referred her to the dean of the school because of this and they gave her a form for her mother to sign stating that she had to report to him daily with the phone and then get it at the end of the day in his office. My friend called the school flipping out.. Her daughter even told them what she was going through at the moment and they still said there was basically no exceptions. To me, that's absurd and cruel.

High school or below...during class time, the phone should be off or on silent, stowed in a bag. Should not see it or hear it while class is in session.

College...everyone is an adult...keep the phones on silent, but if someone who is paying to be there wants to dick around on their phone the whole class, that is their business, so long as it isn't disturbing the class.

Phones should never be taken away. Just asked to be put away if they are a distraction.

Yes. Or at least have the student out it away, that's what I do. It's a total distraction. And I don't see why it's a big deal if its a school rule and a student isn't following they can be punished.

I didn't really explain why I didn't agree with it   sorry ladies!

But I do agree if they're playing with it or what not it should be taken away. But if their work is done, they aren't doing anything to bother anyone else a little cellphone use won't hurt anyone.

i dont think so.. if it is that bad she can be taken out of school and her mother can have homework sent home to keep up with the class.
