I don't give a damn what my students do during work time. If they are done with their work, who cares what they do. The same for music... my students are always welcome to listen to music while working.

HOWEVER.... abuse those rules and I will say to put the phone/music away. If they keep doing it then I'll send them to the office. During student teaching we were told NOT to take phones or anything, because lets say the phone gets stolen/broken during class... we could be responsible. If we take it and give it back the student can still claim we broke it. So instead, the office can call their parents if they refuse to wait for quiet time.

Phones can be useful tools as far as the internet goes. I don't see them as something bad to be honest. They just need to be used right and in the right time.

To me it is seeing that other students were charging their phones / on them as well. She was doing her work, but had her phone charging on her desk... He could have taken away all the other students phones as well but didn't.

It is that bad, Her daughter is very into her school work and refuses to take time out unless it hits a turn for her father. School helps her to keep her mind off of things that are going on at home.
If she can handle being in school then why not be there doing the work THERE? Charging a phone shouldn't bother a teacher as much as it did her.

I see it as an excuse to bend the rules. If she was wanting to charge her phone there was no reason she couldn't have gone to the deans office or her counselor and ask them to charge her phone for her. If something changes in the status of the fathers health, the school can always be notified. Any responsible parent would call the school and have someone take the child from the classroom to notify them of the emergency or come to the school themselves. I would NEVER call my childs cell phone knowing they are in class and say "so and so passed away" or what not. They are a child and really need someone there for them not a cold call. So, the reason is really moot to me.

Regardless, for many many many years there weren't cell phones and we all lived thru tragedy, emergency and class without text and iPhone apps.

He may have, or the other students complied and put there phones away. As a teacher most cell phone or getting in trouble stories are grossly exaggerated to parents.

   & if she didn't have her phone out playing on it and texting on it at inappropriate times it wouldn't have had a low battery. The school is in the right, sorry her dad is going through tough times, but that doesn't make it okay for her to be disrespectful, imo.

Her daughter confessed and her story was correct based on what the dean and teacher themselves told her mother. I think it just bothers me so much because I know her so well and know if she said she took a check at it, she really did only take a check.

school from 9am until 330 pm is not going to leave your phone with 100% battery. especially stupid android phones. Their batteries suck!!

Updates can wait. They aren't important while she is in school. If she wants to call and check in between classes that is 100% up to her. We used to use the payphone during study hall or lunch. Sometimes we used the phone in the office if we needed something. Cell phones aren't a necessity in life. They are a convience at best.

I am not 100% sure that I believe that she was the only one to have her phone taken away or that she wasn't messing with it. It just doesn't seem logical from an adult point of view. There are always a few sides to every story and honestly, this one clearly has another side that none of us are privy to.

I just don't buy it. I get some teachers totally have power trips over cell phones,and I teach with some. But nothing like that has happened.... And schools do have phones, If something happened someone can contact her at school. I just don't get why parents defend these actions, shouldn't an education be the most important thing to your child?

I do agree. That is very true now that I think about it.
I guess I just really agree with the student because that school is so unorganized and they're a new school that just... I don't know how to explain it, but their curriculum basically sucks.
