When Did You Start Your LO on a Sippy Cup & Nix the Bottle?
posted 27th Nov
The nutritionist at my WIC appointment advised me to start Logan on a sippy cup, and to wean him off of the bottle soon. Apparently, it's to prevent tooth decay problems.
I was surprised - he seems a bit young for that (6 months). But, then again, I'm a first time mom - so I'm wondering if this is the norm.
Lo can do a lot at his age - but I don't know if he's ready for the sippy cup, or if it's even necessary yet ... or maybe he is. Gah, I don't know. I guess I'll give it a shot - but if he's not up for it, I won't push it.
At what age did YOU start your infant/LO on a sippy cup? Did you implement both bottle and cup?
When did you cpmpletely nix the bottle?
This may be a post and run, so TIA

I did at one year - that's what my wic office lady told me and I weaned her off around 12 mos and by 13 mos she was completely off the bottle.

Both my son and daughter were off bottles and binks at 6-7 months no longer I hate seeing a 2 year old with a bink or a bottle drinking juice out of it :\
You don't offer both one or the other never both it gives mixed emotions about it. Go one way or another. Good luck

With both girls I introduced the sippy w/water at 6 months.
K didnt take to it, she REFUSED any type of cup until 13 months and at that point I threw away the bottles.
M started using the sippy at 6 months but I didnt have to wean her from a bottle because she was EBF.

2 days after he turned one. He wasn't interested before then
And just for the record, WIC is usually full of smurf. Do what your pedi tells you. He doesn't NEED to be weaned off the bottle yet.

We started introducing sippy cups when they were allowed to have juice. Then when they turned 1 or a month before we stopped with the bottles altogether and went with sippy cups because they were drinking regular milk. Im currently stuck at that point. My 3 year old still refuses open cups, while my 2 year old loves to drink out of a "big girl cup".

my lo started trying to use a sippy at 6m he still hates it and still takes a bottle when he gets on but he is breast fed so thats just what he gets most the time...but if tooth decay is the problem just brush the teeth good every morning and night, i even brushed my little mans gums before his teeth started coming in ...

I actually disagree with this. Only give breastmilk/formula with a bottle and you can give water with a sippy cup. I have done it this with with both of my LO's and have never had any issues with confusion. I wouldn't worry about weaning your LO until they get closer to a year old but you can give them a sippy cup when they're playing on the floor or eating to get them used to it.

My pedi is useless
But I agree. WIC gives a lot of crap advice.

Introduced the sippy with only juice/water combo at 7 months
Completely off the bottle only sippy with 1/2 formula - 1/2 milk at 11 months

My oldest started a sippy at 4 months but had formula & bottles until 13 months. My littlest nursed for 2 months, then formula fed...stopped bottles during the day completely (and switched to milk because she wouldnt drink formula anymore) right when she turned 11 months. She gets a bottle of milk at night but that's stopping next month and will switch to a sippy of warm water.

Hmmm, interesting. Looks like 6 months is the majority age here.
I guess I'll offer it, but if he doesn't like it, I won't push it. I'll let him go at his own pace.
I wouldn't mind him switching over at around 1, so no big deal.
Thanks a lot, ladies!

my 2 youngest kids i had off the bottle by 9 mons old, my older 2 didnt give it up untill after 2 years old! it is sooo much easier to get them off when they are younger.

I used a bottle til his 12th month but introduced a sippy at 10months just for him to try it out. Ive only heard tooth decay with going to bed or laying down with a bottle all the time when they fall asleep.
