How do I get him to shut up?

posted 27th Nov
FIL, I mean. He keeps telling me I need to give DS cereal in his bottle. He's 2 months old! He keeps saying that they gave DH rice cereal that young cuz he'd drink 16oz of formula and still be hungry. Great! DS drinks like 4, MAYBE 6oz at a time. I keep telling him it's bad for them, but he just won't listen. I'm so sick of it.

And to make it even better, the other day I found Lufthansa DH's grandfather fed DS. PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE. Are you smurfing kidding me? Not only do you feed my 2 MONTH OLD SON without saying anything to me, you fed him something that he could've possibly been allergic to! I was so pissed. DH was like, well he's old and he's dying, what can you do? Uh... I can never leave our son alone with him again, is what I can do.

DH actually got mad at me for flat out refusing to consider putting cereal in DS's bottle. He was like, "You can't just shoot down every idea." Uh, when it's bad for the baby I most certainly can.

End rant.

While u have every right to be mad and u know ur baby best it isnt bad for baby to have a bit of cereal in their bottle. Our first would drink 8oz then be hungry 30mins later, this was at 6wks old. Doc told me to put a teaspoon or 2 of cereal in his bottle to help him stay full. It worked like a charm. I would have jumped all over Fil for giving my baby fudge! Im sorry but dying or not u dont give a 2mo old fudge.

My sil put cereal in her kids bottles starting the day she brought them home. 2 out of her 3 kids are obese for their age. It makes unhealthy fat cells. I would ask him if he wants to be the cause of an overweight child in the future.

My mom gave us all cereal at like 2 months. Me and all my brothers and sisters are fine. My sisters son is 1 month old and she gives him cereal
not all the time but it makes him full and sleep through the night.

Don't give out ignorant advice. Cereal in a bottle is a choking hazard (among other things) and is NEVER supposed to be given unless under direct supervision for reflux.

It's a major choking hazard that can kill them, and beyond that, introducing solids before their GI tracks are mature enough to handle it can cause digestion problems for the rest of their lives. So, yeah, it's pretty bad for them.

Because that's super important for a 1 month old to be doing

Well that is some lazy parenting. If a baby is hungry it should be nourished not just given fillers with no nutritional values so it will sleep longer.

While it may make them feel full, they are waking for a reason. Babies need the nutrition from their milk which is why they wake. Cereal does not have the nutrition that they need, it is empty calories. And cereal in a bottle is a choking hazard.

Yes, you absolutely can shoot down an idea if you have evidence that it's either not beneficial to your child, or just won't work.

My mother harassed the hell out of me about this very same thing. I just ignored her. My son slept through the night when he was ready, and all was well with the world.

DH was 300 pounds in high school, he should know better!

And, babies that young have a natural reflex to push food out of their mouths because their bodies aren't ready to handle it. Yeah, it's be for them.
