How do you punish your kid(s) when they are bad at school or do something wrong at home?

I guess it depends on the offense. Regardless of what it was, we talk about it. It can be anything from staying in their room for the day, to writing 500 sentences, to being grounded for a week.

Mine aren't in school yet. We do time outs mostly. However, I also try to figure out what the problem is if it's a continual thing. Like, if it's hitting, then I try to figure out why he's hitting and what I can do to resolve the issue as well. Sometimes we take things away. As in, if they can't play nicely with the ball after a warning, we take the ball away. We do not spank.

Writing penalties don't work. And neither does grounding really. And putting them in their room makes a kid associate their room with bad instead of rest....

definitely depends on what they have done, it can be from anywhere to no t.v & toys for the night, with early bed time, to writing sentance on what he did wrong, to time out.

Works for my kids. I made my Daughter write sentences once, for going behind my back to get permission from her Dad to do something after I'd already told her no. She was notorious for doing it. She had to write 500 sentences about it and she hasn't done it since.

Yeah I had to write penalties as a kid. My dad thought it worked. It didn't. I just figured out how to be more sneaky.

My kids lose their stuff.
ipods
ipads
laptops
video games
tv time

they sit at the table and write lines. My 10 year old does 100-200 lines depending on the offence. My 4 year old gets 20-50 lines depending as well.

When they are done with their lines, they write an apology (if needed) then they are sent to their rooms for the rest of the night, only to come out to eat and pee shower etc...

While in their rooms they clean, re-fold their clothes and re-put them away, re-organize toys etc....

That is for serious things like hitting and talking back etc...

Smaller offences is usually no tv and electronics for the night, and sent to their rooms with early bed.

I also take away other activities like: Skating on friday nights and going to watch hockey games, swiming on saturday afternoons and skating again on sundays.
We go to the movies on Tuesday nights every week and they lose that option as well if they act up.

My kids are pretty good tho, they usually maybe lose one of those activities or need to write lines maybe once a month. lol

I also sometimes (depending on what happened) for them to write me a letter on what they did, why they chose to do it, what they accomplished from doing it and if they would do it again. lol

And then they get to chose their own punishment (if it is suitable) and go from there.
