Tonsils, adenoids and tubes... OH MY!

posted 27th Nov
In 9 days, my 4.5 year old daughter will be having her tonsils and adenoids taken out and tubes put in her ears. I've spoken with her surgeon and he's given me the basic information so far, I'll be learning more at the pre-op appointment 2 days before the surgery. I've been trying to find information about the surgery online, but everything is so stiff and I've already heard it all from the surgeon. It's not really in depth. I don't know if that's because it's such a simple surgery or if there's just really not a lot of info on it online.

I want some personal experiences, things you fed your child afterward, what kind of medication did they take after, how long was their recovery, how did you deal with it. That kind of thing. And if anyone knows of a good website that has more info on these sugeries, that would be greatly appreciated also.

Yeah I know. My husband had his tonsils taken out a couple years ago and it was hell on him.

How old were you when you had it done? Did you have tubes put in also?

Grade 4 or 5. I didn't have tubes but I know a kid who did. He was having a hard time hearing and would always have ear aches. Once the tubes went it he was way better and his speech improved. He was between4-6 when they out them in. They fell out and now he doesn't need them.
Hope that helps you feel better.

My 14 year old DD had her's out when she was 4. It was a fairly quick procedure...in and out of the hospital within a few hours. She was in a good amount of pain for the first couple of days but they gave us liquid vicodin and ibuprofen. She also had an antibiotic. She slept a lot for the first couple of days. I fed her lots of popscicles, broth, jello, pudding. The standard tonsilectomy foods. She really did recover quickly. They say 2 weeks but it didn't even take that long. Now my 11 year old is going in next month for her's. Not sure how she'll do since she's older.

All of my doctors wanted to take my tonsils out when I was a little kid, but it never happened.

One thing they always promised me was all the ice cream I could eat when I came out of surgery, and that made me not so scared, because let's face it, what seven year old doesn't like ice cream?!

Basically anything soft, I'd say. Put her on a diet that you'd usually be on after you get your wisdom teeth taken out. Same thing... kind of. She wont be able to talk for a while, so make sure you two have hand signals worked out so you know what she wants when she wants it or if she needs something... That is, if she can't write yet.

Hope I helped.

I don't know about tubes but when my oldest was 2.5 they took his tonsils & adenoids out. I never really understood why tubes never went in but later found out they felt the others coming out would help the drainage and tubes prob weren't going to be necessary. Which was the truth. So I stocked up on Popsicles, jello & soup for him. Surgery day I was a wreck trying to stay strong. They actually came out took & him so fast. I guess it was so he wasn't upset going in. Less than an hour later the nurse came out & briefed me on what to expect when we went back. Ivs, blood and he will be violent coming out of the anesthesia. So I went back, they gave me a scrub top so my shirt didn't get ruined. I got to hold him right away and sure enough 5 mins later he was yelling and hitting me & I had to stay strong and comfort him until he realized who I was and he calmed down. They gave him an otter pop & within an hr decided he was ok to go home. They sent us with liquid Vicodin. I stopped to get myself some Wendy's and headed home. He slept the whole way home & once we got home he woke up saying he was hungry. So I put him upstairs, go downstairs to get him some pudding and an otter pop, came back upstairs & he was happily eating my hamburger. I called the nurse hotline and they said if he's feeling up to it then eating regular food is fine. So he ate my Wendy's and I ate his pudding lol. He was back to his active self less than 4 hours after the surgery. This was Friday he was back to daycare Monday with no problems.
